Course Description:

Algebra I is the first course in a sequence of three required high school courses designed to ensure career and college readiness. The course represents a discrete study of algebra with correlated statistics applications.

The standards in the three-course high school sequence specify the mathematics that all students should study in order to be college and career ready. Additional mathematics content is provided in fourth credit courses and advanced courses including pre-calculus, calculus, advanced statistics, discrete mathematics, and mathematics of finance courses. High school course content standards are listed by conceptual categories including Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Conceptual categories portray a coherent view of high school mathematics content; a student’s work with functions, for example, crosses a number of traditional course boundaries, potentially up through and including calculus. Standards for Mathematical Practice provide the foundation for instruction and assessment.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of 8th grade mathematics.

Course Outline: The following topics will be taught in Algebra I. The order of the units was constructed by the Georgia Department of Education.

  • Unit One: Relationships Between Quantities and Expressions
  • Unit Two: Reasoning with Linear Equations and Inequalities
  • Unit Three: Modeling and Analyzing Quadratic Functions
  • Unit Four: Modeling and Analyzing Exponential Functions
  • Unit Five: Comparing and Contrasting Functions
  • Unit Six: Describing Data

Note: The teacher reserves the right to adjust the schedule of the syllabus to meet the needs of the students.

Rules for Classroom Management: The following rules and procedures are designed to create an effective learning environment and to use class time correctly. What should we be in class?

  1. Be responsible: Bring a pencil, calculator, and your notebook to class every day.
  2. Be prepared for class when the bell rings. This means your pencils are sharpened, and you have brought your textbook and notebook unless otherwise notified. This time is also to be used to copy and work on the work that will be on the board for you. Any student not in the classroom when the bell rings is considered tardy.
  3. Be courteous: Remain in your desk during class. Throw all trash away before class begins. Walking around the room during class without permission is rude and disrespectful to both teacher and students.
  4. Be patient: Do not ask to leave the room. Get water and use the restroom before class. Do not ask to use the restroom (especially during instruction.)
  5. Be cooperative: Pair work and Group work: You must participate when given pair work or group work. Give and ask for assistance. Be friendly and positive. Help each other.
  6. Be respectful and polite to all other students and the teacher. This means that you do not shout, use abusive language, or laugh at another individual in the room. Listen when someone else is talking.
  7. Be polite: No eating or drinking allowed. During class, do not (1) comb or brush your hair, (2) apply make-up, lotion, or nail polish. *This rule applies for male and female students!
  8. Be attentive: Do not sleep or lay your head down during class.
  9. Be smart: Follow all school rules. If you don’t break the rules, you will not have to worry about me enforcing the interventions.

Behavior Interventions

  • Conference with student about the misbehavior and its negative impact on their learning
  • Call parent to discuss behavior and interventions
  • Conference with student and graduation coach, liaison, or counselor
  • Contact/Refer to Assistant Principal

** Any student who is a major disruption to classroom procedure will be referred immediately to their Assistant Principal.

Grading Policy: The following will be the grading policy for Algebra I:

Summative Assessments40%

Formative Assessments 60%

End of Course Test (EOCT)20% of the final average

Summative Assessments: Summative assessments (tests) will be administered on Thursdays and are extremely important. I will let you know 3 days prior to the test to begin preparing for it.

Formative Assessments:

Quizzes will be announced and unannounced as decided by the teacher. Performance tasks will be completed in class and at home. These tasks will be cumulative for each unit. Completing class work and homework will be a necessity in order to survive this course. They will be checked and rechecked through a variety of daily and/or notebook grades. Do not get behind on assignments and seek help with those that are difficult to you. All assignments that are done in and out of class that are not tests or major projects will fall in this category.

Notebook: Notebooks should include notes, tasks, classpractice, home practice, and returned practice. Use a pencil! Assignments should be dated and labeled. Write the date assigned and problems assigned at the top of the page of your classpractice and home practice. Keep your notebook organized! I will be checking to make sure that notebooks are in order.

Missed Class:

It is the responsibility of the student to arrange for makeup work. Makeup work from an absence MUST BE arranged within three days of the student’s return to school. All tests and quizzes must be made up before, after school, or at lunch. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a makeup date and arrange transportation needs.

It is the responsibility of the student to request additional help (I will need to be notified at least twenty-four hours before the student plans to stay).
