CT Standard 7 – Database

Value: Worth 50 points for standard CT-7

Unit Objectives:

Students will understand that a database stores records that contain specific information. Also, students will learn how to manipulate databases and output the information in various formats. Students will be able to define and create database files and prepare reports to solve specific problems.

How you will learn it:

Reading: Carefully read the text below under "Database Directions: Basic Instruction"

Model: Use this link to access the Database Directions

Read these Database Terms before you begin.

Watch this Tutorial Video on How to Make a Database.

Instruction: Sign up for a mini-lesson by your teacher or a peer tutor.

Peer Instruction: You will teach others about the standard.

To complete this standard: Create your database on your H: Drive in the CT-7 folder

1) – Design the four databases below and do all assignments

2) – Generate (but don’t print) all 6 reports; (2 reports per database)

3) – Do the “sort and report” section and generate (but don’t print) the 3 sorted reports.

4) - Design the “Friends” database. (read all the instructions carefully)

5) – Ask the teacher for the “Friends” report. (they will make it up on request)

6) – Open the “Friends” report and have the others open on your screen when you bring your tracking sheet back for a grade. (You will have to open access 4 times to get them all open)

2.  Prepare the following 3 reports (one for each database) Look at each one below.

3.  Use the Database Report Checklist to verify that you have met all of the requirements

4.  Have the reports open on your screen when you go back to get signed off

Watch the video on database sorting to help you complete these reports

Databases #4 “Friends”

File Name: “Friends”

You are to create a complete database that will be used to hold all relevant information about your friends. Include any information (fields) that may be useful in anyway at your 10 year class reunion. (This means any and all information that you can think of about your friends) YOU are to determine what information will make up a complete database however, keep in mind that you don’t know what information will be on the report until you ask your teacher. So when you are creating the fields think of dozens. (this cannot be done with fewer fields) **Don’t EVEN ask the teacher how many fields to include! (Brainstorm dozens!)

1) Create the database by entering all field names and field info.

2) Now, Input 6 records.

3) Next, ask the teacher for the report.

4) Finally, open all 10 reports and go back for a grade.

How you can loose points on this standard:

1) Not reading and/or following instructions. (Amount depends on teacher’s mood!??!)
