  1. Course Objectives

Computer Business Applications is a one-year class that is designed to provide knowledge and skills required in the technology-based workplace. Students are expected to have keyboarding skills upon entering the course. Students in Computer Business Applications will review basic keyboarding operations and be introduced to current word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation applications as well as online safety and practical digital security to establish them as digitally literate citizens in our technology driven world.

  1. Course Rationale:

This course provides an overview of digital literacy topics such as computer hardware, software, programming, security, safety, and information systems. This is a "hands-on" class learning to use the most common computer software programs and information resources facilities. This course will also include further development of proper technique and typing skills. This course provides a look at the structure and components of computers, their operating systems, and an introduction to various applications with emphasis on word processing

  1. Signed WCC Technology Agreement
  2. Student supplied paper and writing utensil.
  3. School supplied Microsoft Office 2016 textbook by Shelly Cashman Series, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Database Software and Typing Master Software.

The following instructional strategies are utilized in this class:

  1. Project-based learning.
  2. Hands-on activities.
  3. Interactive software.
  4. Small group work.
  5. Lecture and instructor-led demonstrations.
  6. Peer teaching.
  7. Select reading from class.
  1. Evaluation

The following items are used to evaluate student progress, all work will be point-based:

  1. Tests/Semester Final.
  2. Teacher Observation.
  3. Class participation.
  4. Class projects.
  5. In-class assignments.

*It is the students’ responsibility to obtain their missing work and arrange make up time the day that they return to school. Missing work will be discussed on an individual basis and an agreeable due date set with a missing homework contract signed by all parties. It will not be accepted after this agreed upon due date.

GRADING SCALE:

A—90% +B—80%-89%C—70%-79%D—60%-69%F—59% and Below

*Grading will utilize a 50/40/10 scale (50% performance and Written Assessments, 40% Projects/Activities/Assignments, 10% Career Readiness Skills) (**If an IRC/TSA is required 2nd semester, it will account for 10% of the final grade)

**The student has the opportunity to receive college credit for this course in the way of articulated credit or dual credit through Ozark Technical Community College (OTC). Articulated credit means that they must attend OTC for at least one course then apply for this course to be added to their transcript. Dual credit means that they will have the opportunity to pay for the credit and it is immediately transferable to any school of their choosing. Information on this option will be coming out at a later date.

The student will be able to:

1. Describe in some detail the various technical components of computers.

2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the fundamental systems model as it relates to information systems.

3. Explain the role that computers play in contemporary society, including limits and uses, and critically evaluate the effect of computers on society.

4. Demonstrate an understanding of application software and their appropriate uses and productively use application software for word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and Internet applications.

a. Format and key various business letters, reports, envelopes, business cards, labels, and tables.

b. Demonstrate use of enhancement features (borders/lines/shading).

c. Format and edit spreadsheets.

d. Create graphs with formulated data.

e. Create a Database.

f. Generate and format database reports.

g. Demonstrate correct use of presentation software.

h. Demonstrate knowledge through original creation and oral presentations using a variety of presentation software.

i. Use of the Internet to enhance the graphics, knowledge, and preparation off classroom assignments.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of safe Internet usage practices in every-day scenarios.

6. Produce and analyze various forms of computer output.

7. Demonstrate usage of machine components and accessories.

8. Develop proper keyboarding technique.

All course assignments and exams are closely aligned to, and assess the student's mastery of these core objectives.

*Academic Honesty – cheating of any kind is not allowed in this class. Cheating is defined as turning in assignments that are not your own work or allowing others to do so. This includes copying answers to quizzes, turning in assignments that someone else has done, letting someone copy your answers, and letting someone else turn in your work as their own. If cheating is discovered, both parties will receive a zero on the assignment and referred to the office for additional disciplinary action. Parents will be notified.

**Career Technical Student Organization opportunity: This course provides the opportunity for the joining of the Waynesville Career Center—Future Business Leaders of America. Dues are $30 which includes national, state, and local dues. Monthly meetings incorporate leadership, ethical, and workplace learning strategies. There is also an opportunity to compete in District, State, and National competitions that can help the student.

  2. Be seated in class and start Bell ringer activity before the tardy bell rings.
  3. NO FOOD OR DRINKS NEAR THE COMPUTERS! NO GUM AROUND COMPUTERS, ON BOTTOMS OF TABLE, ON BOTTOM OF CHAIRS, or ON THE FLOOR!
  4. Bring writing utensils and paper to class each day.
  5. Bring a pass from the appropriate personnel if late.
  6. It is expected that bathroom breaks and drinks of water will be taken care of during the 9-minute passing time.
