Course Title: Computer Applications

Instructor: Josh Bentley,

Text: Various text books and supplementary materials, including but not limited to newspapers, periodicals, and web documents.

Software: Microsoft Office 2010, Windows Explorer, and Mozilla Firefox

Course Description: The purpose of Computer Applications course is to introduce students to the computer as a tool enabling them to develop personal management skills and apply those skills through computer software applications.

Spreadsheet

v  Plan and create a spreadsheet

Graphics/Draw/Paint Programs

Requirements:

Students enrolled in Computer Applications I are required to:

v  Complete daily assignments, daily set inductions and homework when assigned

v  Maintain classroom behavior that provides themselves and other students with an environment in which optimum learning can take place.

v  Maintain a Class portfolio

v  Participate in monthly “Dress for Success” on the 1st Wednesday of each month

Daily Assignments:

Each student will be responsible for completing daily assignments. These assignments will include but not limit too: daily bell ringers, completion of daily activities, quizzes etc. This section will make-up 20% of the final course grade.

Projects:

As a growing part of Career and Technical Education courses project based learning is becoming more prevalent. In this course, project-based learning will be the main focus for assessment. This section will make-up 30% of the final course grade.

Portfolio:

A major part of being successful in business and life is good organizational skills. As a part of the course of instruction for this class each student will be responsible for maintaining a revolving notebook of all course materials that are used in class. This section will make-up 15% of the final course grade.

Work Ethic:

Within this class, your work ethic grade will include your performance in various areas that relate to your participation and performance. You also will be evaluated on your participation with “Dress for Success” days which will be the 1st Wed. of every month.

Dress for Success”:

Men will wear dress slacks such as khakis, dark blue, brown, or black pants with a collared shirt and/or tie. Shirts must be tucked in at the waist and pants belted. Pants are to be worn at the natural waist.

Ladies will wear either a dress with sleeves, a dress with a jacket, dress slacks and a dress blouse and/or jacket. Ladies should wear dress shoes. Sleeveless dresses are not considered business attire.

T-shirts, pullover shirts, jeans, tennis shoes and clothes with holes of any kind are not considered

“Dress for Success”.

Students within the business department will be graded based on a 0% or 100% scale. Either you are dressed appropriately or you are not. There will be no intermediary grades given. If you are absent the day of “Dress for Success”, you will be required to make it up by dressing another day after arrangements have been decided upon by you and Mr. Bentley. You must make arrangements within one week of your return or receive a 0 for no participation.

Final Exam:

Students will be responsible for a COMPREHENSIVE final exam. This section will make-up 15% of the final course grade.

Tardy Policy: Students are expected to be in the classroom when the tardy bell rings. Students who are tardy will be disciplined according to school tardy policy.

Out of Class Policy: Students cannot exceed 5 excused reasons to be out of each class each semester unless they have medical documentation on file in the clinic. Once a student has used his/her out of class privilege the student will be assigned detention for each occurrence after the 5th. Students are given time between classes to use the restroom and should use this time wisely to avoid being out of the classroom during instructional time

Classroom Guidelines: To be successful in any business education class, the student should follow these classroom guidelines to ensure a learning environment:

1.  Students should respect themselves, the teacher, and the equipment at all times in the lab.

2.  Upon entering class, students should log on and check course calendar for class activities. Be in assigned seat, already on task, when the tardy bell rings.

3.  Listen—follow directions the first time.

4.  No adjustments or changes should be made on any computer part.

5.  Students are expected to participate in ALL class activities.

6.  Raise hand to be recognized before speaking.

7.  Hand in assignments on time. Due dates are set for each assignment given. If a student does not complete the assignment during class time, the student should initiate before or after school arrangements with the teacher to finish BEFORE THE DUE DATE of the assignment. Let me know as soon as possible as I have sports responsibilities and will make arrangements for another teacher to stay after

8.  ABSOLUTLEY NO FOOD, DRINKS, CANDY, ETC WILL BE PERMITTED IN THE COMPUTER LAB (EXCEPTION: WATER IN ORIGINAL CONTAINTER).

9.  AS STATED IN OUR COUNTY POLICY, NO COMPUTER GAMES SHOULD BE PLAYED AT ANY TIME DURING CLASS. PLAYING GAMES WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF COMPUTER PRIVILAGES, A HAND WRITTEN ESSAY and/or AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION.

If a problem with your computer is found because of failure to follow rules, you will be sent immediately to an administrator for disciplinary action. Malicious damage will result in the student having to pay for all costs incurred in the repair of the equipment.

Discipline Policy: If the student chooses NOT to follow the discipline plan, the following steps will be taken:

·  1st offense: Verbal warning

·  2nd offense: Teacher and student discussion

·  3rd offense: Detention and parent notification

·  4th offense: Administrative referral

Severe clause: For any offense that is regarded as “severe”, the student will immediately be referred to an administrator.

Items are subject to change without proper notification.
