REGULATIONS

of the XI International Rachmaninov

Competition for Young Pianists

(Veliky Novgorod, April 8-12, 2018)

1. General Provisions

1.1. The International Rachmaninov Competition for Young Pianists(hereinafter referred to as the Competition), held every two years in the oldest city of Russia – Veliky Novgorod. It is an influential specialized competition, the history of which lasts for a quarter of a century. Special significance of the Competition is that it unites young musicians in the homeland of the great composer, pianist and conductor SergeiRachmaninov. The Competition has become the notable event of the cultural and musicallife of Veliky Novgorod and Russia. Many of its prize-winners and participants became musicians in adulthood, gained international fame and recognition. The Competition is included in the Music Competitions Association of Russia.

1.2. The Competition is held from 8th to 12thApril 2018 in the Concert Hall of the municipal autonomous cultural institution "Center for Culture, Art and Public Initiatives ‘Dialogue’"(B. Moskovskaya St., 37/9, Veliky Novgorod, Russia).

1.3. The founders and organizers of the Competition are

- Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation,

- Department of Culture and Tourism of the Novgorod Region,

- Administration of Veliky Novgorod,

- Culture and Youth Policy Committee of the Administration of Veliky Novgorod,

- Rachmaninov Center for Music Culture (department ofthe municipal autonomous cultural institution "Center for Culture, Art and Public Initiatives ‘Dialogue’").

1.4. The Competition has the following objectives:

- identification and support of gifted children and the youth, development of their performing skills, as well as professional orientation;

- attraction of public attention to classical music and music education of children and the youth;

- increase of the work prestige of music teachers and educational organizations;

- exchange of experience in the field of solo piano performance between music teachers and educational organizations;

- instilling perception of classical music, involvement of a larger number of children and young people in the art of music;

- promotion of Veliky Novgorod as the birthplace of the world-famous musician SergeiRachmaninov.

2. Participants of the Competition

2.1. The Competition is open to young pianists living in Russia and abroadwhose age and programme to performcorrespond to the Regulations.

2.2. Competitive listening is held in the following categories and age groups:

Category A.Pupils of children’s schools of music.

Age groups: A-1 – upto 12 years (inclusive);

A-2 – from 13 to 16 years (inclusive).

Category B.Pupils of specialized schools attached to conservatories, students of music colleges and art colleges.

Age groups: B-1 – up to 12 years (inclusive);

B-2 – from 13 to 16 years (inclusive).

The age of the claimed group is evaluated on the date of the Competition’s beginning (8thof April 2018).

3. Requirements to the programme

3.1. Requirements for the participants’programto perform (by categories, age groups and tours) are set out in Addendum 1.

3.2. The programme should consist of various works. The order of performance of the declared works is free in each round.

3.3. Sergei Rachmaninov’s works are compulsory for performing in all categories, age groups and tours (except for the 1st round of the younger age group of category A, where it is just desirable).

3.4. The works by Sergei Rachmaninov, performed in the 1stround,cannot be performed in the 2ndround.

3.5. Timekeeping of the programme:

Age groups: A-1 (up to 12 years) –up to 15 minutes;

A-2 (13-16 years) –up to 20 minutes.

Age groups: B-1 (up to 12 years) –up to 20 minutes;

B-2 (13-16 years) –up to 25 minutes.

3.6. In the 2ndround the participants of the category B-2 perform a compulsory piece written especially for the Competition (Mikhail Pletnev.Little Variations on Rachmaninov’sTheme). The music of the compulsory piece will be e-mailed to the participants immediately after receiving their applications for the Competition.

3.7. Changes in the programme are not allowed after submission of the application.

4. The procedure of competitive listening

4.1. Competitive listening is held in two tours in the Concert Hall of the municipal autonomous cultural institution "Center for Culture, Art and Public Initiatives ‘Dialogue’" (Veliky Novgorod, B. Moskovskaya St., 37/9) for all age groups in both categories.

4.2. The listening is held publicly on the Steinway grand piano.

4.3. All works of the programmehave to be performedfrom memory.

4.4. The order of the participants’ performances is determined by the date of their birth, however, the jury, on an exceptional basis, may decide to change the order because of the illness of participant or other irresistible force.

4.5. Participants of competitive listening do not receive a fee for performance at the Competition, for the further use of records and broadcasts of these performances.

The rights to audio and video recording of the participants’ performances in the competitive audition belong to the Organizing Committee of the Competition.

4.6. Each participant of the competitive listening will be provided with one acoustic rehearsal for each tour on the stage of the Concert Hall of the municipal autonomous cultural institution "Center for Culture, Art and Public Initiatives ‘Dialogue’", where the Competition will be held. Minimal time of acoustic rehearsal for each tour: 15 minutes – the younger age group, 20 minutes – the older age group.

4.7. The final decision of all organizational issues emerging in the preparation and conducting of the Competition remains with the Chairman of the Organizing Committee.

5. Jury of the Competition

5.1. International jury consisting of reputable Russian and foreign musicians is invited to evaluate the performances of the participants of the Competition.

5.2. The jury listens to all participants of the Competition, evaluates their performances, decides on admission to the 2ndround, on awarding titles, on awarding prizes, on forming a list of participants in the gala concert.

5.3. The chairman of the jury of the Competition has the right to a second vote in disputable situations.

5.4. The jury of the Competition has the right to award more than one laureate’s title of each degree, and also not to award any of the titles.

5.5. The jury of the Competition has the right to award or not to award special prizes, as well as to award a special prize to several participants.

5.6. Member of the jury, associatedin any way with a participant of the Competition, do not participate in the evaluation of his / her performance.

5.7. The decision of the Jury of the Competition is drawn up by the protocol, is final at all its stages and is not a subject to discussion or revision.

6. Rewarding of the Competition’s participants

6.1. All participants receive a certificate of participation in the Competition.

6.2. There are three laureate places in each category and in each age group for awarding, as well as the Grand Prix (given by a special decision of the jury). The winners of the Competition are awarded by the title of laureate and diplomas of laureates of I, II, III degrees, as well as cash bonuses in the amount of

Grand Prix – 50,000 rubles,

laureate of the I degree – 30,000 rubles,

laureate of the II degree – 20,000 rubles,

laureate of the III degree – 10,000 rubles.

Money prizes are divided equally between the winner and his / her teacher.

By determination of two laureates of the same degree, the bonus amount is divided between them in equal shares (except for the first degree and grand prix).

In case the funds allocated for the provision of a bonus fund in a group or category are not fully spent (the jury not designate the laureate of I, II or III degrees), then at the proposal of the Organizing Committee, the funds in the amount of the remainder are used to increase the cash bonuses to winners determined by the jury.

6.3. All participants of the 2nd round are awarded by the diplomas of the Competition.

6.4. Two best participants of the 1st round, who did not pass in the 2ndround, are awarded by special diplomas and encouraging prizes.

6.5. Participants of the Competition can be awarded by the following special prizes:

- for the best performance of the work of Sergei Rachmaninov;

- "Hope" (the best participants of younger age groups who did not become laureates);

- aspecial prize of the Rachmaninov Center for Music Culture "for the best performance of Mikhail Pletnev’s Little Variations on Rachmaninov’s Theme;

- a special prize of the Administration of Veliky Novgorod –Rachmaninov-scholarship (to the best Novgorod participant of the Competition).

6.6. All teachers are awarded by letters of thanks.

6.7. It is possible (in coordination with the Organizing Committee of the Competition)to establish special and additional prizes by other state, commercial, public, creative organizationsor individuals(both Russian and foreign). The awards must be agreed with the Organizing Committee no later than the beginning of the Competition. The distribution of these prizes is the jury’s competence only.

7. Financial terms

7.1. Non-refundable entry fee for the participants from Russia is 3000 roubles. Entryfee for the participants from neighboring countries and beyond is 50 euros (translated into roublesaccording to the current exchange rate on the day of payment). Commission for the entry fee transfer is to be paid by the applicant additionally. A copy of the entry fee transfer is to be attached to the application documents. No application will be considered without a copy of the relevant bank transfer. Entry fee is spent on publishing a Competition booklet and meal (tea and pastry) for the participants during competitive listening. For banking details refer to Addendum 2,please.

7.2.The competitors and their entourage defray all the expensesof their stay and food. Foreign competitors arrange visas by themselves. The Organizing Committee of the Competitionwillbe gladly provide necessary invitations; however it will not be responsible for obtaining visas and related cost.

7.3.The prize fund of the Competition is raised with charitable donations from sponsors.

8. Requesting procedures for entering the Competition

8.1. For applying to the Competition you need till 15thof February 2018 send one at a time the completed application in only electronic form e-mail on Rachmaninov Center for Music Culture’s address e application, which includes:

–thefilled application form (in *doc format; for the Application Form refer to Addendum 3, please), and a scan of the filled application form signed by the competitor (if older than 14)or / and itsofficial representative;

– a scan of competitor’s birth certificate (passport or substitutional document);

– a scan of the relevant bank transfer;

– a scan of verification letter from music educational establishment (on official letterhead) verifying competitor’s study in the establishment;

– a good quality photo / several photos in *jpg format, in size not less than 500kb and no more than 2mb.

8.2.Applications must be received strictly till the deadline 15thof February 2018. Incomplete applications without or not completed accompanying materials as listed above or received after stated date will not be accepted. In the application form should be included teacher’s passport data, pension insurance certificate data and taxpayer identification number.

8.3. In the filled applications must be duly written names of composers, titles, opuses and keys of performed compositions. Be sure to state a timekeeping of each composition.

8.4. Foreign competitors send applications in Russian or English as chosen by them.

8.5.For competitors who refuse to perform in the Competitionno entry fee will be refunded.

8.6.The filled application for the Competition with signatures of the competitors (if older than 14)or / and their parents / official representatives confirms the acceptance of all conditions of the herein Regulations.

1.J. S. Bach. Invention / Sinfonia /Prelude and Fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier (choice of competitor).

2.Two variouspieces of Russian composers. Pieces of S. Rachmaninov would be an asset.

2ndRound:

1.Sonata, sonatina or variations from the Classicism epoch; in sonata should be performed 1st movement or 2ndand 3rd movements (choice of competitor).

2.A piece of S. Rachmaninov.

3.One or several pieces of composers 19th – 20th centuries.

A-2. Age 13 – 16 (inclusive)

The program shouldn’t exceed 20 minutes.

1stRound:

1.One of preludes and fugues of J. S. Bach, P. Tchaikovsky, N. Rimsky-Korsakov, S. Taneyev, D. Shostakovich, R. Shchedrin, S. Slonimsky.

2. Sonata or variations by following composers: J. Haydn, W.A.Mozart, L.Beethoven, F. Schubert; in sonata should be performed 1st movement or 2nd and 3rd movements (choice of competitor).

3. One or several pieces of S.Rachmaninov.

2.One or several composers pieces of the Romantic epoch (F. Mendelssohn, R.Schumann, F. Chopin, F. Liszt, J.Brahms, E. Grieg and others).

3. One or several pieces of S.Rachmaninov.
