Product Description
This product is generally a pressure sensitive product containing the primary features of any label application. Made with an adhesive property that allows the product to be temporarily affixed to a carrier and provide for adhesion to a future surface, labels are one component of a Record Keeping System.

General Use
Color-coded labels are used to specify and categorize the contents of an individual record or file. It is the label aspect that allows the user to organize their system in either an alpha or numeric sequence. In addition, labels can be used to further classify similarities and identify of records. In a record keeping system, labels are traditionally affixed to the outside of the record in either a top tab or side tab position.

Color Coded Label Specification Guide
Size
______x ______
(width) (height) / Labels are measured width by height. Measurements vary based on the original manufacturer.
Common sizes include:
1-½" x 1"
1-½" x ¾"
1-5/8" x 15/16"
1" x ½"
1-¼" x 1"
1-¼" x 1-5/16"
Color / Used in combination with the size and content, the color helps to indicate which system is being used. Generally, the color is applied on white label stock.
Content / The content refers to the information printed on the label itself. There are five categories of label content:
  • Alpha Letter Labels
  • Numeric Digit Labels
  • Date Lables (Month or Year)
  • Designation Color Labels
  • Information Labels
Alpha Labels contain the letters of the alphabet and may have special consideration for the combination Mc and St given the system being used. Numeric Labels contain the numbers 0 through 9 and double-digit numeric labels contain 00 – 99. Date Labels include both month labels and year labels. Designation Labels are solid color bands used to differentiate and classify similar folders. Finally, Information Labels contain special instructions and warnings.
Material / Three types of material are used to create color-coded labels:
  • Paper
  • Mylar (poly-laminated)
  • Kimdura
Paper labels traditionally contain a matte finish and are easily frayed and torn with normal use. These labels provide the least amount of protection and are replaced frequently. Mylar labels, also referred to as poly-laminated, are the most popular and provide for greater durability due to the "laminated" finish. Mylar labels generally have a shiny, or gloss, finish.
A property of label adhesion is that in some instances, labels will try to resume their original form. Given that labels are produced flat to a carrier, and later wrapped around a folder, there may be a tendency to pull away from the folder to resume its original form. Kimdura contains an extra chemical compound that contradicts this theory. Kimdura is said to maintain the form as applied. While Kimdura may be more effective in some label applications, mylar labels have proven very usable in record keeping systems.
Construction / Labels are produced and prepared for distribution in one of three forms:
  • Rolls
  • Packs
  • Ringbooks
Both packs and ringbooks are manufactured with multiple labels per sheet. When selling roll product, consideration should be given to the manner in which labels are dispensed: Labels wound in or out. Safeguard roll labels are wound out – labels face towards the outside of the roll. Many systems and compatible product have the labels wound facing into the roll.
