COMPARATIVE OF MEANS OF TRANSPORT OF GOODS DELIVERY

During the European Mobility Week 2016 we wanted to make a related activity with the CycleLogisitcs Ahead project, so we decided to organized a comparative of modes of transport of goods delivery.

We got Seur, a transport company parcel, courier and domestic logistics in Spain that currently undertakes part of their deals with cargo bikes in donostia, to gives us a van for doing the comparative.

We did the comparison between a van, a motorcycle, a bullit and a cargo bike.

Previously we stablished some rules for each mode of transport and we simulated three deliveries throught the city.

Each mode of transport decided which route to take to reach each destination, always respecting the rules.

Then, the routes taken by each means of transport, travel in kilometers and time taken are specified. Later you will find a table with fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of each.

Travel and data for each mode of transport

BULLIT

Distance : 3,9 km

Duration: 15:01 minutes

CARGO BIKE

Distance : 3,5 km

Duration: 18:00 minutes

MOTORBIKE

Distance : 4,16 km

Duration: 26:39 minutes

CO2 Emissions: 0,503 kg CO2

0,121 kg CO2 per kilometre

Economic spending: 4,63 €

Fuel price per liter: 1,159 €

unit of fuel used: 4 liters

distance traveled: 4,16 km

fuel costs per kilometer: 1,0013 €

fuel costs for the specified distance: 4,636 €

VAN

Distance : 5,95 km

Duration: 31:13

CO2 Emissions: 1,172 kg CO2

0,197kg CO2 per kilometre

Economic spending: 9,09 €

Fuel price per liter: 1,299 €

unit of fuel used: 7 liters

distance traveled: 5,95 km

fuel costs per kilometer: 1,5282 €

fuel costs for the specified distance: 9,093 €

COMPARISON BETWEEN EACH MEAN OF TRANSPORT

BULLIT / CARGO BIKE / MOTORBIKE / VAN
DISTANCE (KM) / 3,9 / 3,5 / 4,16 / 5,95
DURATION (MIN) / 15:01 / 18:00 / 26:39 / 31:13
CO2 EMISSIONS (KG) / 0 / 0 / 0,503 / 1,172
ECONOMIC SPENDING (€) / 0 / 0 / 4,63 / 9,09

So, after seeing these results, it is clearly proven that the best way to make last-mile distribution in the city is undoubtedly the cycle logistics: bullit, cargo bike, tricicles…

Allow the same route in less time and more importantly, without polluting. The economic issue is also very important for companies that are considering investing in these vehicles because eventually leave more profitable.
