COMPARATIVE CLIMATOLOGY OF THE TERRESTRIAL PLANETS (CCTP)
An approved new title in the Space Science Series
Author Responsibilities
PLEASE READ this message carefully and use the response form at the end of this message to indicate your definite commitment to participate.
Your response should be sent to: NO LATER THAN 26 March 2012.
As the Lead Author for this chapter you have the full responsibility for:
- Making the selection of Co-Authors (if any) for your chapter.
- The quality of the content of your chapter.
- The on-time submission of your chapter, no later than 18 June 2012.
- Performing a prompt revision of your chapter, taking carefully into account the comments from the reviewers and instructions from the Editor.
CO-AUTHORS
If you make any co-author selection(s), keep in mind each is expected to make a substantial contribution to the content of the chapter. Therefore, the number of added co-authors per chapter should not exceed two or three unless a specific need for additional co-authors can be clearly demonstrated. Please keep the Editors (Mackwell and Bullock) informed of your co-author selections, which you should make carefully over the next several weeks.
CHAPTER CONTENT
The essential quality of the content within a Space Science Series chapter is to address:
- What do we know?
- How do we know it?
- Where do we go from here?
Keep your audience firmly in mind as you write your chapter. Your audience is a first-year graduate student reading about your topic for the first time. Build up your topic from the beginning, giving sufficient details to make your chapter readable but relying heavily on references to previous review articles and major works within your area. In many ways, the reference list you create for your chapter is just as important as the content of the chapter itself. Your chapter should highlight areas of uncertainty or disagreement. Specifically state what goals might be accomplished within the next 10years and which problems should be addressed by new students or fellow colleagues during the course of the next decade.
CHAPTER LENGTH AND FORMAT
The target length for each chapter is 20printed pages. Assuming about 950words per printed page (7"wide × 9.5" high), then as an example, a total of 20 printed pages translates to about 15,000 words (15.5pages) of text, plus 3pages of figures, plus 1.5pages of tables. A full set of guidelines will be forthcoming once you have accepted.
CHAPTER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 18 June 2012
All editorial processing and typesetting will be performed by the Lunar and Planetary Institute. Because this work is being performed on a contract basis, there is simply zero flexibility in the process for late chapters. If you cannot or will not deliver your chapter on time, we hold the right to revoke your invitation to write this chapter and select an alternate Lead Author who can immediately provide what is needed. Late chapters are also subject to cancellation.
NOTE ABOUT THE DEADLINE AND COMPARATIVE CLIMATOLOGY CONFERENCE
This 18 June deadline does indeed fall immediately before the "Comparative Climatology Conference" to be held in Boulder June 25–28 (
We are asking all authors to bring their chapters to the conference, where new ideas and cross-fertilizations garnered there may be worked into the chapter during the Referee-Revision phase. Our experience shows this very much "fast tracks" the overall production of the book. (However, we note that conference participation is not a requirement for participation in the book, and vice versa.)
PAGE CHARGES
Page charges are normally requested from authors to defray sufficient costs that the books are able to be sold at a rate that is accessible to graduate students. At present, we are negotiating to cover the costs of page charges from other sources. Any changes in this situation will be communicated immediately to the authors.
SUMMARY
On behalf of the Scientific Organizing Committee, we thank you in advance for your participation in Comparative Climatology of the Terrestrial Planets. We look forward to working closely with you. Please contact us with any questions as we proceed to set a foundation for this new field.
Sincerely,
Richard P. Binzel,
General Editor, Space Science Series
Stephen Mackwell and Mark Bullock, Editors
