Community Service portfolio is a tool that enables the student to document information, perceptions, and reflections related to his/her involvement in community service. The objectives of the portfolio are to assist the student in understanding: (1) Civic Responsibility, (2) Reciprocity, (3) Personal Development, (4) Community, (5) Non-profit Agencies, (6) and the Dynamics of Non-profit Organizations. Students must purchase a three ring binder to use for this project. Review & Respond must be a word document and placed in the binder. You may use your own creativity to design the contents of the portfolio.

Provide a description of the site selection process. Address the following:
  • What factors went into your decision?
  • What skills and experiences do you bring to the agency?
  • What were the advantages and disadvantages for each site you considered?

  • How did class readings affect your decision making process?

Write a one page typed double-spaced history of the agency/service site.
Address the following:
  • What is the history of the organization? When did it start? What is its mission? Has the mission changed?
  • Is it a local or national organization? Have any national or prominent people been involved in its origin or history?
  • Are there other organizations that address the same issues or problems? How does the local picture reflect or differ from the national picture on these issues/problems?
  • What particular insights on solutions to the problems are offered by those working in your agency?
  • Are there any special programs or activities the agency sponsors?
  • What is the source/sources of income for the organization?
  • How does the organization get its name out into the community (newsletter, brochure, newspaper, etc.) ?

Research an article in the library that deals with an issue your agency addresses or
with community service. Another option is to find an article that explains how
“civic engagement” is related to community service and political action. Be prepared
to review the article for the mid-term class and include it in your portfolio.
