GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Provides Court Security for the Magistrate and Municipal courtrooms and to assure that all citizens are safe in those particular areas.

Attends all Community Meetings and provides information to citizens.

Maintain the safety and upkeep of police vehicles at all times to include: brakes, oil changes, etc.

Assist the road patrol when needed.

Assist with walk-in complaints.

Assist with evidence.

Supervises subordinate officers through chain of command; performs such supervisory duties as scheduling; instructing; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; acting on employee problems; and recommending employee disciplinary action.

Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed.

Responds to and/or provides leadership and coordination in emergency or high-risk situations; participates in criminal and other investigations. Performs general law enforcement duties, including patrolling assigned areas, checking property for security, maintaining order and public safety, responding to traffic accidents/incidents and issuing citations, serving warrants, apprehending and arresting suspects, questioning suspects, assisting crime and accident victims, investigating alarms, collecting evidence, etc. Provides court testimony as required.

Receives and responds to citizen inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance.

Works under stressful, high-risk conditions.

Performs various general administrative tasks, including but not limited to preparing correspondence, compiling data for reports, copying and filing documents, attending meetings, answering the telephone, etc.

Reviews the reports of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; completes and submits reports as required.

Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars; maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms.

Remains abreast of all federal and state laws, and ordinances of the city of Chester.

Receives reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports including incident reports, accident reports, work schedules, various forms and reports, memos, etc.

Operates a police vehicle, firearms, restraining devices, breath analyzer, radar, two-way radio and other police-issued equipment as well as a variety of other equipment including a computer, typewriter, adding machine, copier, telephone, etc. Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment required to complete assigned tasks.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, subordinates, other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, suspects, victims, witnesses, medical / hospital personnel, other emergency response agencies, sales representatives, and the general public.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs various public service duties, including directing traffic at school crossings and during special events, providing police escort, assisting stranded motorists, etc.

Performs related duties as required.

Assists with training of new officers.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Requires a high school diploma and completion of required criminal justice training and education, supplemented by three to five years of experience in law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and experience. Must possess S.C. Law Enforcement certification and a valid state driver's license. Reports to the Captain.
