This booklet contains information which we hope will be helpful to you and your family or carers during your stay within the hospital. Please take time to read this booklet and feel free to speak to a member of staff about anything that is not clear.

About the GP Unit

The GP Unit is a 17 bedded unit which comprises of 4 x 2 bedded ward and 9 single rooms.

Also operating from the GP Unit and staffed by the GP Unit Nursing Team are the Out of Hours Service, Minor Injuries Unit and Out-Patient Departments.

Aim

The aim of all staff within Blairgowrie Community Hospital is to ensure that all patients receive individualised care and are treated with dignity and respect, ensuring best use of resources within the ward. During your stay, your needs will be assessed by nursing and medical staff, and if required, referrals made to other services, e.g. Physiotherapist, Dietician, X-Ray, Occupational Therapist, CPN, MacMillan Nurse and alternative therapies.

Care/Treatment

Whilst you are in the GP Unit you will be cared for by the multi-disciplinary team consisting of GP, Nurses, Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist. The team are available to answer questions. Your planned care will be kept in a folder at your bedside. You are free to read this at any time, and with your permission, relatives/carers may also read it.

Your Discharge From Hospital

Once discharge/transfer has been confirmed by your GP, The multi-disciplinary team will plan it carefully, in consultation with you, family/carers, and if necessary, District Nurses, Social Work Department and any other agency that will be involved with your care.

Manual Handling

All the nursing staff work to a safe manual handling policy to ensure both patient safety and also that of the nurses. The nursing staff will help and/or advise you with moving whenever necessary, or will use the appropriate equipment to help you if you are unable to manage yourself.

Medicine Rounds

Nursing staff wear a red apron when carrying out medicine rounds. It would be appreciated if staff were not disturbed during medicine rounds if possible.

Friends of Blairgowrie Community Hospital

Founded in 1984 the “Friends” are a Registered Charity and consists of volunteers whose aims are to raise funds to promote the welfare of patients and staff and provide aids and comforts not financed by the Health Board. Donations are always welcome.

Spiritual Care / Church Services

There is a hospital Chaplain who visits regularly to offer spiritual care and support, or the nursing team can arrange a visit from your own minister or priest.

Visiting Times

Visiting hours are 2.30pm – 4.30pm

6.30pm – 8.00pm

Out with these times arrangements can be made with the Nurse in Charge.

Meal Times

Breakfast 8.00am

Lunch 12.15pm

Tea 5.00pm

Please make any dietary requirements known to any member of staff.

The GP Unit applies the Protected Mealtime Policy.

Toiletries

Towels are provided by the hospital. Listed below are toiletries/belongings you may wish to have:-

Soap

Shampoo Talc

Toothbrush Toothpaste / Denture Powder

Deodorant Hairbrush / Comb

Razor Shaving Foam

Continence Products / Pads

We encourage patients to wear their own clothing during the day. Clothes requiring to be laundered will be placed at the back of your locker in a bag ready for family member/carer to launder. Please speak to a member of staff if no one is available to do your laundry.

Medication - please bring any current medication with you.

Smoking - NHS Tayside has a no smoking policy.

Alcohol - is permitted if prescribed by your GP, but must

be handed in to the nursing staff.

Valuables - money, jewellery, pension book, should be left

with your family or carer.

Newspapers - these are not available in the hospital but

delivery by the local newsagent can be

arranged.

Library Books - are available from the hospital.
