Community Engagement Volunteer

Who we are:

The Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust (APPCT) is a statutory charity set up by the London Boroughof Haringey to run Alexandra Park and Palace. Alexandra Palace is located in a Conservation Area. The Palaceis Grade II listed with English Heritage and the Park is on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens.

Why we need your help:

As part of our Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF) bid, we are keen to develop and deliver a range of programmes and projects that meaningfully engage different audiences across the Borough of Haringey, including underrepresented or marginalized groups. We wish to raise our community profile by creating strategic links and partnerships within the community as well as a range of learning and development opportunities for local people.

Essential information:

  • Applicants are considered on their merits and regarded equally
  • We will induct and train you to carry out the role
  • For relevant roles, we will apply for a Disclosure Barring Service check – having a criminal record isn’t a barrier to volunteering, this is simply to protect children/vulnerable people we work with
  • We will cover travel expenses to a maximum daily limit of a Zone 1-6 off peak travel card (£12.00)
  • Food vouchers of £5 will be provided to those who volunteer 4 hours or more on a given day and may be used in the Bar & Kitchen, Ice Caféand the Lakeside Cafe
  • This role description is intended as an indicator of general areas of activity and will be amended with any changing needs of Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust. It is expected that the volunteer will be flexible, using this document as a framework

Community Engagement Volunteer Description

Role Title / Community Engagement Volunteer

Suggested Tasks and Activities / We are looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to assist us with the following:
  • Locate and engagenew groups and organizations in Haringey
  • Decide how best to grow new and current links with our community
  • Help us design and develop meaningful community projects
  • Act in the role of a professional public face on behalf of APPCT
  • Present information about APPCT to community groups
  • Create a community newsletter for distribution
  • Help us build on the work set out in our HLF proposal

Commitment / We are looking for volunteers to commit 1-2 days per week, Monday to Friday, ideally for a minimum of 3 months. Initial training and orientation will be available with our Head of Learning and Community Programmes.

Skills and Experience /
  • Friendly, approachable and confident
  • Experience working with a wide range of people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities
  • Experience working with diverse and less well-accessed communities and cultural organisations, understanding potential barriers
  • Enthusiasm for heritage or museum spaces
  • Good communication skills & a good level of spoken English
  • Reliable with good time-keeping skills
  • Administration skills (Microsoft Office, Internet)
  • An understanding of the London Borough of Haringey would be an asset
  • An understanding of other languages (such as Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese, Turkish) would be an asset
