12.15 REGISTRATION OF THE SOCIAL SERVICES WORKFORCE

The Scottish Government is consulting on the introduction of new legislation proposing “end dates” (ie. deadlines) by which certain categories of the social services workforce will require to be registered with the Scottish Social Services Council. After these dates have passed, it will then be an offence for employers to employ anyone in these categories who is not registered with the SSSC (or who does not register within a specified time frame after new employment). These categories include all those social services workers for whom the register is already open, including all categories of staff in residential child care and care homes for adults, managers of adult day care services and all workers in day care for children.

Diane White from the Scottish Government Workforce and Capacity Division of the Children, Young People and Social Care Directorate will present information about the proposed legislation. Judith Midgley, Director of the Voluntary Sector Social Services Workforce Unit will comment on the proposals and then the floor will be opened up for discussion.
