Community Boat Co-ordinator, ‘Hazel’ the Wellbeing Boat
Salary: £18,000 pro-rata (£10,800 actual)

Background information:
The Wooden Canal Boat Society works with volunteers to restore historic narrow boats and put them into community use. The society own 6 wooden canal boats, operates community recycling trips by boat and runs charity shop in the centre of Ashton-under-Lyne. In 2014 Big Lottery funding was awarded to set up a wellbeing boat service on one of the societies newly restored boats ‘Hazel’. The service launched early in 2016 and is now running local wellbeing cruises and longer relaxing breaks for people who have poor health.
Main purpose of the job:
To manage the day to day activities of ‘Hazel’ the wellbeing boat. Key duties include to recruit, manage and support volunteer crew, coordinate delivery of crew training programme, advertise the service, manageboat bookings, crew rotas and to oversee income and expenditure to ensure the service continues to operate in a sustainable way.
Main tasks and responsibilities:
- To be responsible for the day to day running and effective management of the ‘Hazel’ community boat and work with the volunteer crew and skippers to operate a practical programme of canal trips to deliver opportunities for wellbeing clients as well as for more commercial activities
- To work closely with The Wooden Canal Boat volunteers to ensure that all canal trips are managed in a way that meets all necessary legislation and the health and safety of its clients
- Work with volunteers to organise promotional and fundraising events
●To advertise volunteer crew and skipper opportunities internally and externally, making links to existing partners and local organisations as well as making new contacts
●To attend appropriate events to promote the ‘Hazel’ service
●To manage and maintain a volunteer crew database and work in accordance with the Data Protection Act
●To deliver the induction programme to volunteer crew and skippers and to oversee the training program for volunteers
●To be the day to day contact for volunteer crew and skippers and to work closely with other volunteers to manage volunteer crew rotas for ‘Hazel’ trips
●To record, monitor and report information about bookings, income, expenditure, crew and skipper numbers and other relevant issues to the ‘Hazel’Steering and Action group and Council of Management at regular intervals and to complete regular Big Lottery reporting forms
Other duties:
●Represent WCBS professionally and at a senior level to external organisations and champion the ‘Hazel’ service and work of WCBS generally

●To carry out the above duties and any other duties commensurate with the responsibilities of the post which may be reasonably required in a manner which actively supports and promotes WCBS aims and policies
●To be responsible for own health and safety and that of colleagues in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant EC Directives, including reporting any health and safety hazards immediately it becomes apparent
