1.Agency’s efforts to prepare children for kindergarten
- Each Head Start teacher was provided a copy of the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum for Pre-Kindergarten and the Ascension Parish Comprehensive Curriculum for Pre-Kindergarten and trained on ways to implement these curricula to insure that our Head Start children are afforded the same opportunities as the children from the other four year old classes in the LEA so that they will be prepared for kindergarten.
- All of the domains, elements, and indicators of The Head Start Child Outcomes Framework are “presented as a framework for building blocks that are important for success” in kindergarten.
- The Head Start teachers incorporate The Second Step Curriculum to prepare the children socially and emotionally for kindergarten.
- PBS techniques/guidelines were incorporated throughout the Head Start sites that correlate with the schools so that the Head Start children know what is expected in kindergarten.
- Transitional activities/meetings were conducted to help make the transitional process to kindergarten easier for the children and the parents such as visiting the schools where the children will go to kindergarten, setting up meetings for the parents of children with disabilities to visit the designated schools and meet with teachers, and obtaining input from the kindergarten teachers on ways that we can help prepare our Head Start children for kindergarten.
- Implemented The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuumas the on-going monitoring assessment that is aligned with The Creative Curriculum and the other curricula that are used as resources.
- Trainings on subjects such as “challenging behaviors”, “teaching strategies”, and “meeting the needs of children with disabilities” were conducted to assist the staff in preparing our Head Start children for kindergarten.
