Job Description and Terms of Service

Background

TB Alert is the only specialist British charity working both in the UK and internationally to fight tuberculosis. Our mission is to work towards the control and ultimate eradication of TB by increasing access to effective treatment for all. We do this by:

  • Raising awareness of TB in the UK, especially among BME and UK-origin populations most vulnerable to the illness
  • Working with PCTs and the third sector to encourage and support more effective partnership working at a local level to raise awareness of TB and in the design and delivery of TB services
  • Providing information, resources and support for TB patients, people concerned about TB, and TB-specialist health workers
  • Advocating for greater global priority for resources to combat TB
  • Developing and funding projects in Africa and Asia which demonstrate best practice in the detection of TB and improved access to effective treatment.

TB Alert is a key partner of the Department of Health in delivering its TB Action Plan. This partnership takes several forms:

- We work with individual PCTs to support them in developing local TB awareness programmes in partnership with local public and third sector agencies.

- We work with key third sector organisations that work with or are run by affected communities. Our aim is to raise awareness, reduce health inequalities and build leadership about TB among affected communities, to ensure they have the opportunity to contribute their expertise and experience to the TB response in England.

- We produce a range of awareness materials (under the campaign brand The Truth About TB, see tb.org) and patient information materials (co-branded TB Alert and NHS).

The Communications and Marketing Manager role is part is our UK team that also includes the Head of Awareness Programmes; Information and Awareness Officer; and administrative support. In early 2010 we will also be recruiting two TB-Community Development Workers, one to be based in London and one in the North of England.

Current funding for this role runs until March 2012, but this is a permanent appointment for a post central to our work and for which we expect to obtain continuation funding.

Job Purpose

To manage

- the promotion and marketing of TB Alert’s awareness campaigns and materials

- the promotion and marketing of TB Alert’s patient information materials

- the development of new awareness and patient information materials

- TB Alert’s media and stakeholder relations

- TB Alert’s corporate branding and image.

Main Duties

- To work with key third sector organisations to develop creative initiatives for promoting TB awareness among their client groups

- To work with statutory stakeholders (primarily PCTs) to develop creative initiatives for promoting TB awareness within their health promotion programmes

- To develop new evidence-based TB awareness and patient information materials, working with our staff team, advisers and partner organisations

- To coordinate feedback on and the evaluation of TB Alert’s awareness and patient information materials

- To actively market the sale of our awareness and patient information materials to PCTs and other relevant stakeholders

- To build relationships and work proactively with the media to highlight the issue of tuberculosis, and raise the profile of TB Alert and its awareness campaigns

- To be the first point of call for media seeking comment and opinion from TB Alert on tuberculosis-related issues, and to liaise with our advisers and media advocates to provide interviews or comments on request

- To increase the visibility and reputation of TB Alert among statutory and third sector stakeholders

- To lead on or support, as appropriate, the planning, delivery and/or presence of TB Alert at workshops and conferences relating to TB

- To lead the development and coordinate the implementation of a new communications strategy and plan for TB Alert

- To manage the content and ongoing development of our organisational and campaign websites and other on-line presence, including building an online TB community

- To monitor and report as necessary on our communications and stakeholder relationships activities

- To manage our database of stakeholder, media and other contacts

- To be the guardian of TB Alert’s brand image and any campaign brands.

Salary

NJC Scale PO2-PO3, commencing between £29,791 and £33,355.

Benefits

Annual Leave: 25 days, calculated on a January-December basis, plus statutory holidays.

Optional pension scheme: employer contribution 6%; employee contribution 5%.

Probationary Period

Six months, with interim review at three months.

Hours of work

35 hours per week undertaken in normal hours, but the nature of the job will sometimes require work or travel outside normal working hours.

Place of work

Our office at Community Base, 113 Queens Road, Brighton BN1 3XG; the post will require regular travel within England.
