Ahoy All,

As May comes to an end, I hope the Gale Force winds, goes with it. Normally we can count on 4-5 Gales but it always seems we end up with more on the race course and our cruising events. One Wet Wednesday was blown out and the other started in 25 knots of wind and the wind died coming back into the harbor. Out Patient ended up DNF. We drifted towards the rocks and had to start the motor and withdraw. So glad to be racing in the Wet Wednesday series again. It has been fun, I have been taking new people out that have not raced before. This years cruising event to Prisoners had to be cancelled again, the weather guessers got it right, it blew hard Friday thru Sunday

The club has been busy, the Channel Islands Women Sailing Association had a fund raiser for the youth sailing program, they had knot tying games, a boat building contest which they actually sailed to get a winner, BBQ and a huge raffle. I bet more than 50 people showed up. A lot of money was collected and they are now deciding how it will benefit the youth sailing programs in both Ventura and Channel Island Harbors.

The local clubs got together and had a dinner and raffle to support the Tall Ship, Bill of Rights. So many people showed up, they had to close the door until someone left, Channel Islands Yacht Club was at full capacity. They raised over 10,000.00 Dollars for the Bill of Rights inspection.

We also had another open house and member appreciation day. Bill and Tina, did a great job coordinating things.

Looking forward to June and getting more time on the water, I hope to see more of you out there. If not, see you at club, the dinners as usual have been the best.

Take care

Randy and Trish

May has come and gone and oh boy what a busy month it was. First and foremost our Wet Weds (WW) season got under way this month. The first two were picture perfect sailing days and then we got blown out on the 3rd weds of the month. It felt like the wind was blowing 40 knots that evening.

The last WW looked a little iffy due to an upcoming gale that, as of this writing, is keeping the club from heading out to Santa Cruz for a long weekend. But more on that later. The volunteers for the last WW arrived at the club the as scheduled to find folks calling to see if WW was still on due to the forecasted winds. I assured all that in fact the committee boat would be on station to start the race. I had been out to look at the conditions and while it looked breezy it didn’t look like too much breeze.

The volunteers readied club for the racer and someone mentioned that the wind had completely shut down. WOW! It was very hard to believe that after a breezy start the wind would die like it did. The folks at the club could hear racers DNF one right after another, all of the saying that there just wasn’t enough wind to make it around the course. Slowly the racers trickled into the club and after a long race there were crew prizes given to the survivors. I would lkike once again to thank those that stepped up to the plate to make the last WW of May a great evening.

Ira Bigeleisen put on another great Cinco De Mayo party the first weekend in May. Prize tickets were passed out throughout the evening and many party goers were lucky to walk away with bottles of their favorite libation. Good Job Ira!

We had our second AYC open house/membership appreciation day of the year on Sat. May 14th. Thanks to all who helped get the club ready to show off to the perspective members that came by. We had a few folks come in for a look at our facilities. Several took applications and showed serious interest. All the AYC members in attendance had a great lunch consisting of fine hot dogs and cold beer. Our next Open House/ Membership Appreciation day will be July 17th. All AYC members are encouraged to stop by the club and be appreciated. Bring a friend or a dock member that may be interested in joining the coolest yacht club in the harbor!

Sunday May 15th, the day after our busy Open House, the Channel Islands Women’s Sailing Association (CIWSA) had their Youth sailing foundation fund raising luau event. This was a well-attended event by the local sailing community. Don Lehman and Jay Chattaway were busy at the BBQ cooking almost 130 chicken kabobs for the day’s event.

Stay with me folks we are only half way through the month.

The 3rd Friday of the month was another fund raising evening event. This event was a fund raiser for the tall ship “Bill of Rights”. This event at CIYC took the place of our regularly scheduled Friday night dinner. This event raised funds for the Bill of Rights Coast Guard required biannual haul out. The AYC members in attendance wore there blue polo shirts as show of unity and we really stood out from the crowd. One of the bartenders commented: “Those folks from AYC are a real nice bunch”.

This brings me to the last of the month. It’s the Friday before Memorial Day and the much anticipated ASBCYC all clubs cruise to prisoners harbor has been cancelled due to a gale warning from NOAA. BUMMER! In place of the cruise there will be a “Cruise to Nowhere” with events for all those sailors that now have no plans for the weekend.

Our Porpoise, Moonshadow and Puff On will be making the cruise to VYC to represent AYC and to participate in the weekend’s events.

CALENDAR CHANGE!!

I am sorry to announce that there will be no casino night this month.

However on June 10th Lucien Lacour and Carol Howe will be hosting a boat naming party on their dock prior to dinner at the club. Refer to the flyer in this Mainsheet for details.

WELCOME!

AYC members, do you have an adventure or story you would like to share? Send them to us! I think an adventure shared makes the experience all that much richer in the telling. I would love to hear from you, and include your ideas, insights, opinions or experiences to our newsletter. Our Staff Commodore, Neil Weinrich has departed on his annual migration to Europe, and the club is left just a little less spirited when he is gone. His quiet, steady support around the club is invaluable, but we wish him well on his journey, and look forward to hearing some highlights (or lowlights) of his trip when he returns.
