Topics Discussed:
1.December 2, 2010 minutes approved unanimously.
2.Lorin Caffelle taking minutes today.
3.New District Wellness Policy- Edwina Lovett was not present to provide an update, but Lorin Caffelle noted that she though she saw an e-mail noting that it had been approved.
4.School Updates:
•TRMS- Lorin Caffelle noted that Barbara Campbell has been out so there has not been a recent wellness committee meeting.
•Danville- Marcia Quigley reports: "Happy Healthy Hour" is being planned for the staff before vacation. Ramone is providing “Caribbean Motion” fitness program for staff.
•Sandown Central- Mary Beth Sharp reports: The committee is scheduled to meet for the first time on Wednesday February 9. There is a “Biggest Loser” competition for the staff.
•TRHS- Anna Tantaro reports: E-mailing of Wellness Wednesday tips continue. Wednesdays are also a weigh-in day. There have been some positive changes made to the menu offered by café services which take into account healthy portion sizes. Kevin from LGC met with staff to share information and available resources. Future undertakings/discussions include a walking program, looking into the Wellness grant available from LGC, and garden boxes for fresh vegetables in the courtyards.
•Pollard –No update available.
•Atkinson - Paula Amante reports: Atkinson Academy is currently participating ina Fruits and Vegetables Challenge. Each week students are asked to bring in a fruit or veggies of a particular color. Health classes are keeping track of the % of students participating per classroom. Winners earn an extra gym class. Staff members are competing in a Super Bowl Challenge where they are keeping track of sit-ups, pushups, etc. completed during the commercials. Students in 3rd-5th grades are invited to participate in movement games before school 1 time per week between February and April vacations.
•Sandown North - Ellen Zimmerman reports: Healthy Snack competition underway- the Golden Apple Award recognizes the winning class each week. Approximately 15 staff members are involved in the “Biggest Loser” competition. A teacher is offering Zumba for staff 1 time per week after school.
•Food Services - George Visconte, Café Services, provided an update from the school cafeterias. Nutritional information of offerings is available. Café Services is involved in a Farm to School project which will help to bring fresh organic local produce to the schools. Portion sizes and offerings are being reviewed and some new ideas are being piloted at the high school. Looking for ways to include the elementary schools including a name that vegetable game or contest, displaying the process used for preparing certain foods, and providing samples to get kids to try new things.
Talked about rewards for any contests be focused away from food. Perhaps could have
an activity such as an extra PE class or other activity to be a rewarded for healthy eating. Education and Reward contains both pieces of the wellness concept- healthier eating
and physical activity.
6.Goals:Update
a.Create a greater awareness of nutrition district wide including celebrations:
The committee briefly discussed celebrations in school. There are mixed results seen school to school regarding the push for healthier celebration alternatives.
b.Expand Health Fair (open to staff and family) Update
Health Fair is April 19th, 2011 at the High School Cafeteria after school 2:30-5:30. Following are the ideas for exhibits/booths for the day. - and those responsible to contact vendors -
1.Café Services and TRHS Culinary Arts Students could work together on some project about healthy eating choices. This idea is still under development. George Visconte
2. Blood Pressure/Cholesterol/BMI by Parkland- waiting for a response - Ellen Zimmerman
3.Primex/LGC for services provided to the district employees. - Edwina Lovett
4.Hannaford Supermarkets –Confirmed for raffle baskets and information regarding gluten free foods and guiding stars. The committee declined the offer to have a pharmacy representative talk about their Healthy Saver program. MaryBeth Sharp will contact Market Basket and Shaws to see if they would also like to participate.- Paula Amante

6.Dentist –Dr. Perrault will provide screenings. Ellen Zimmerman will contact Dr. Hope regarding an educational component. Paula/Kate Sherman-DeRoche

13.Fatal Vision Goggles- Can be provided by LCG-Edwina Lovett
14.Dermatologist – Melanoma Foundation of NE can do screenings of the face and provide educational materials- waiting for a response- Lorin Caffelle
15.UNH Cooperative Extension - Lyme disease –Confirmed- Paula A.
16.Public Health –Will provide a raffle and emergency preparedness information Ellen Z.
17.Acupuncture –being checked on- Anna Tantaro
18. Letters to thank vendors for volunteering is being updated. Patty to send the letter to confirm vendors. Updated letter should include a line for special requests/needs for presenters.
19. Anna and Patty will look into getting rectangle tables, extension cords, etc. for the vendors
20.Kelly or Scott will need to be asked to put the Wellness Fair on My Learning Plan
21. Other Vendors Discussed
a. Local Organic/Sustainable Farms- Heron Pond/Mill Pond/Farmer’s Market Association- Patty
b. Dairy Council- Paula
c. Stonyfield- need to check and see if this would violate the no solicitation policy
d. Ellen to ask Parkland to do blood pressure screenings, etc.
e. Edwina- Ask Primex to provide information regarding when to have what screenings, etc.

23. Can the wellness committee sell healthy refreshments to fund future projects?
24. Water for vendors/presenters?
Plan:Each member forwards contacts for confirmed vendors to Patty to send the confirmation letter. Committee is meeting Thursday March 10, 2011 in the high school cafeteria to determine layout/table assignments for vendors and determine other last minute needs.
