a)HCES (Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies) Board Meeting Tuesday, September 19, 12:00pm – 1:00pm at Belt Collins Hawaii
2)Student Section Report –Ryan Roque
a)Participating in Freshman Challenge event. Allows for freshman to participate in projects prior to start of school year. Challenges are predetermined for team of different disciplines to collaborate with help of UHM Engineering club assistance. Historically no incentives to mandate continued participation/commitment to project
b)College of Engineering Career Fair set for Wednesday, October 18, 1:00pm – 4:00pm
c)Professional Networking Dinner specific date, time, and costs pending. To be scheduled same week as College of Engineering Career Fair. Previously good turnout of both students and professionals
d)Will be participating in Holmescoming scheduled October 20, 2017
e)ASME shirt sale: Date of availability and sales stand pending
3)UHM DME Report – Dr. Trimble
a)There are 402 undergraduate students registered in ME for Fall 2017 (224 Seniors, 94 Juniors, 39 Sophomores, 45 Freshmen). Additionally, there are 76 pre-engineering students that are registered for at least one ME course
b)We expect to have at least 25 graduate students in ME for Fall 2017
c)Marcelo Kobayashi is now the chair of the ME department
i)ME Department will be collaborating with UH Hawaii Natural Energy Institute for offering more Technical Electives on energy related subjects
ii)Trevor Sorenson will be managing a new design course program (to revamp ME 213, ME 481, ME 482 courses). Includes more participation from all professors, and will add focus on aerospace
iii)Introducing a CO-OP program for selected students to receive capstone design credits
iv)Major changes to thermos-fluid curriculum
d)Joe Brown, an expert in nano-technology, to join department on August1,2017
e)Woochul Lee, and expert in nano-scale energy transport, will join department on January 2, 2018
f)Professor Beei-Huan Chao retired
g)Advertising for 2 positions in Fall 2017, likely 1 in Mechanics, and 1in thermos-fluids
Unfinished Business:
1)Shirt orders arrived
2)Padfolios were previously ordered as thank you gift to those who present as guest speakers at ASME-HI meetings. Derek to obtain quote for additional order, as only 3 remain.
New Business:
4)Tours:
a)HECO CIP Power Station - 1 MW battery project. Tentatively a Saturday in October 2017. Details pending.
b)Kauai Facility ( New solar city/Tesla Solar Plus Storage Project; Green Energy Closed-Loop Biomass Plant). Details pending
5)Hawaii ASME Bylaws:
a)Suggested administrative change to Hawaii ASME bylaws to be in line with National ASME bylaws: Changing “Directors” to “Members”(limited to 2 positions)/
b)ACTION: Tabled to next meeting pending specified formality requirements of this change
