Championship Game - Blades vs. Blues
The defending champion Blues made it to back to the championship game and took on the vaunted, mighty Blades for the Summer League Championship. While the Blues were able to keep it close (much closer than most teams had this summer), they weren’t able to pull it out and fell to the Blades 60 to 52. The husband/wife team of Matt (16 points) and Kelly (11 points) Thys poured in a combined 27 points to lead the Blades to the victory. Hale had 14 and Melton had 11 for the Blades as well. For the Blues, Rhodes led the way with 13 while Dick Beville and Jessica Johnson each had 9.
Summer League MVP…. Actually Summer League MVP’s! Matt and Kelly Thys (Blades)
We have a first – the first ever husband and wife MVP’s! Both Matt and Kelly Thys had great seasons for the Blades. Commissioner Cortese and the Associated Press were unable to decide who should get the MVP trophy and with the issue threatening to fracture the Thys household, it was wisely decided to name them as Co-MVP’s.
Three Point Contest Winner - Jessica Johnson (Blues during the Summer, Lightning during the regular season)
Jessica hit her second-to-last shot in the three point contest to clinch the win and be awarded the title of most awesome shooter. “After losing in the Finals, I was NOT going to leave that gym without a trophy!” she explained to ESPN staff on-hand after the contest.
