Choral Call to Worship: The Lord Is in His Holy Temple

* Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Trinity Hymnal № 457

*Prayer of Invocation and Thanksgiving

*Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Proverbs 30:1-9

The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle. The man declares, I am weary, O God; I am weary, O God, and worn out. Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.

Who has ascended to heaven and come down?

Who has gathered the wind in his fists?

Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment?

Who has established all the ends of the earth?

What is his name, and what is his son's name?

Surely you know! Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. Two things I ask of you;

deny them not to me before I die: Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, "Who is the Lord?" or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.

*Praise Song There is a Redeemer

There is a Redeemer, Jesus, God’s own Son;

Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One.

Chorus

Thank You, oh, My Father, for giving us Your Son,

And leaving Your Spirit ‘til the work on earth is done.

Jesus, my Redeemer, name above all names;

Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, O for sinners slain.

Chorus

When I stand in Glory, I will see His face,

There I’ll serve my King forever In that holy place.

Chorus

Unison Confession

Jesus, forgive my sins. Forgive the sins that I remember, and the sins I have forgotten. Forgive my many failures in the face of temptation, and those times when I have been stubborn in the face of correction. Forgive the times I have been proud of my own achievements, and when I have failed to boast in Your works. Forgive the harsh judgments I have made of others, and the leniency I have shown myself. Forgive the lies I have told others, and the truths I have avoided. Forgive me the pain I have caused others and the indulgence I have shown myself. Jesus, have mercy on me and make me whole. Amen.

Private Confession

Assurance of Pardon

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

Sermon Notes

Introduction: We are going to talk today about the most popular religion in the world. It has and always will be more popular than Christianity. It’s called the religion of works righteousness. The Pharisees and Scribes subverted their faith into a system of works to be right with God. The danger is that it is so easy to begin thinking and living that way. Paul warned of it Galatians 2:15 – 16.

I.  The Pharisees Observe Law Breaking from Their Perspective – 7:1 – 4

A.  They were spying out Jesus

B.  Mark explains this custom for his Gentile readers

II.  The Pharisees Talk a Good Game – 5 – 8

A.  The Pharisees outwardly talk about following God

B.  The Pharisees act just like their ancestors

III.  The Pharisees Miss the Real Point of the Law of God – 9 – 13

A.  Jesus corrects their misreading of Moses

B.  Jesus gives an example how they don’t understand

Conclusion:

A.  Justification by works is dangerous to our souls.

B.  Jesus calls them hypocrites. What is a “hypocrite”

Welcome

Welcome to Covenant Presbyterian Church. We are a church that is resolved, as the Apostle Paul said, to know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. This means we are a community seeking to discover just how amazing the love of God is, as we see it in the Gospel.

We are glad you are here, and we hope that you will find that there is a place for you at CPC as we worship Christ together.

Please introduce yourself to us by filling in a Guest Card, which you should find in the pews in front of you. These cards simply help us to know who you are, and how we can best serve you.
