Training Packet for School Staff --- Behavior Adjustment Class

The purposes of the behavioral point sheet are to aid the student in developing the ability to "self-monitor" their own behavior, to provide information to the ARD committee on program effectiveness, to provide a vehicle for reinforcing positive behavioral change and to serve as a communication tool between adults working with this student.

The point sheet will be reviewed and discussed at least daily (and more often if individually necessary) by the student and the BAC teacher. The behavioral grade (as determined by the percentage of total points the student earned) will be graphed by the student with the supervision of the BAC teacher on a daily basis. If a student is having difficulty in a certain area, additional behavior learning packets may be assigned by the BAC teacher. Also, the student's behavior goal may be adjusted periodically:

For example, a student's behavioral goal for completing assignments may be

"shaped" as follows as they work through the "steps" of the program:

  • Complete assignment
  • Complete assignment with passing grade
  • Complete assignment with passing grade within specified time frame
  • Complete assignment with < 2 redirections per hour from the teacher
  • Begin assignment within 3 minutes of the bell without direction from the

teacher

  • Complete and turn in assignment within specified time frame without any

negative comments, complaints, or arguments

  • Complete assignment and place in "completed work" folder in binder

without reminder from teacher

  • Raise hand to request help from the teacher
  • Upon completion of work, put in binder and begin silent reading in library

book without direction from the teacher

For those students for whom it is appropriate, a group counseling session will be held by the special education counselor to focus on positive behavioral change and individual responsibility for behavior. Students participating in group counseling will need to have a "Counseling Eligibility" form accepted by their ARD committee, and counseling time must be approved as a related service.

An individual "step program" will be developed for each student. Each student's individual step program and behavior graph will be posted in a place that is readily visible to the student. Following are general guidelines for developing the step program. However, each Step Program is to be unique in nature and to be individualized to the needs of the student.

STEP 1

1. Student's IEP will be implemented in an area of the BAC classroom that is free of peer interaction. This is to provide the student with an opportunity to focus on their own behavior without distractions and to learn the rules of the BAC classroom.

2. Student must raise his/her hand to receive permission to speak.

3. Student is to ignore inappropriate behavior and comments made by others.

4. Student will eat lunch in an individual study carrel.

5. Reinforcers for work completion and appropriate behavior are individual in nature and do not include any group participation.

6. In general, students must receive a behavioral grade of 85% or better for 3 consecutive days to move up to Step 2.

7. If a student is placed on Step 1 for discipline purposes (while enrolled in the BAC program), they will return to their previously acquired Step after receiving a behavioral grade of 85% or better for 3 consecutive days on Step 1.

STEP 2

1. Students may eat lunch in the cafeteria with their peers. They will carry their behavior point sheet with them, and will have it completed and initialed by the school staff assigned to monitor the cafeteria.

2. Student must raise his/her hand to receive permission to speak.

3. Student is to ignore inappropriate behavior and comments made by others.

4. Student will continue to complete academic work in an individual study carrel.

5. Reinforcers for completed work and appropriate behavior are expanded, but still do not include group activities.

6. In general, students must receive a daily behavior grade of 85% to move up

to Step 3.

STEP 3

1. Students will attend one class, to be selected by the BAC teacher, outside of the BAC classroom. Students will be responsible for taking their behavior point sheet to that class and having it completed and initialed by the classroom teacher. If a student does not return to the BAC classroom with their behavior point sheet, the BAC teacher or paraprofessional will accompany the student to that classroom to receive a behavioral grade for that class period during some portion of the student's '"free time" that day.

2. Students may complete academic work at a table in the BAC classroom, rather than in a study carrel.

3. Student must raise his/her hand to receive permission to speak during work time in the BAC.

4. Student is to ignore inappropriate behavior and comments made by others.

5. Reinforcers/privileges for completed work and appropriate behavior may include time on the computer.

6. Students must maintain a daily behavioral grade of 85% for ___ consecutive days to move to Step 4.

STEP 4

  1. Student will attend three classes outside of the BAC classroom.
  2. Follow procedures in Step 3.

3. Reinforcers/privileges for completed work and appropriate behavior may include group activities. If student exhibits more than 2 infractions of social rules during the group time, student must return to study carrel. At the completion of any group activity, student will be required to complete a self-monitoring sheet on his/her group behavior.

4. Students must maintain a daily behavioral grade of 85% for ___ consecutive days to move to Step 5.

STEP 5

1. Student will attend all classes except one outside of the BAC classroom.

2. Follow procedures in Step 4.

3. Students must maintain a daily behavioral grade of 85% for ___ consecutive days to move to Step 6.

STEP 6

1. Student will attend all classes outside of the BAC classroom.

2. A determination will be made by the student, BAC teacher and special education counselor as to whether the student will be required to take a behavior point sheet to all classes.

3. After the student has met behavior criterion set forth at the time of initial placement in BAC (see baseline data and target behavior goals) for ___ weeks, an ARD meeting will be held to consider dismissing the student from the BAC program. If an ARD committee determines that the student continues to need a behavior point sheet as a behavioral modification, this point sheet will then be monitored by the resource teacher on the student's home campus.
