COLOUR AT CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK 2017:MAPEI FOCUS ON TRENDS IN COLOUR

Mapei’s Specification Centre on Great Sutton Street is home to dedicated Specification Mangers and technical advisors throughout the year. We invite you to call in during Clerkenwell Design Week to meet the team and explore colour in construction as Mapei collaborates with leading key figures from the world of design and architecture, learning more about the world leading products manufactured by Mapei.

Day one: Discover your coloured grout mood

Mapei experts team up with President of the British Institute of Interior Design,Daniel Hopwood, as hepresents‘Colour in Interior Design’ from 11:30am on day one of Clerkenwell Design Week. Celebrity abstract artist, Jen Allen, provides incredible, colourful live entertainment, taking inspiration from Mapei’s 2017 “Set the Mood” colour collections, creating a ‘Glamour’ abstract mood piece from 2-4pm.

Experienced Technical and Specification professionals will be on hand to share their knowledge, answer questions and provide tailored advice on Mapei’s “Set The Mood” range of over 50 grout colours. The grout colours will be a key focus at the festival and have been developed using a sophisticated 3D imaging programme, with the latest tile design trends in mind. Mapei are the first company operating in the ceramic sector using 3D imaging to study and develop a dedicated coloured grouts portfolio.

Day two: Marvellous Materials and coloured floor finishes

Colour, Trend and Design Forecaster Laura Perryman presents “Emerging Colour Trends for 2017- 2018” at 11am, followed by founder of the Materials Council, Ian Hunter,presenting“Marvellous Materials”at 2.30pm.

Ultratop Loft is the ideal coating product to create highly decorative interior floors and walls with a pronounced mottled effect. The consistency of the product means that it can be used on both walls and floors and with the scope for installing in a various range of colours and finishes, this popular product can produce a variety of original and unique coatings to suit your interior design trend. Product Managers and specification specialists will be available to provide technical advice and information about the Ultratop system together with innovative Mapefloor Comfort; Mapei’s seamless comfortable flooring solution which is available in a plethora of customizable RAL colours.

Celebrate Mapei Group 80th birthday during Wednesday evening, 6-10pm. Arrival drinks and canapés will be served from 6pm, followed by an introduction to Mapei. Pianist James Murphy provides blissful live music from 7pm providing the perfect atmosphere for you to unwind after day two whilst networking with the experienced Mapei Technical and Specification professionals.

Day three: Coloured sports flooring systems

Coloured sports flooring systems will be the focus for the last day of Clerkenwell Design Week; Mapei invite you to explore a virtual Italy via cycling simulators, linking with Mapei’s proud sporting history and connections with the UCI road racing. The winner of the Brompton Foldable Bike, worth over £1,000, will be drawn at 4pm; visit Mapei’s Specification Centre on Great Sutton Street to learn more.

At Clerkenwell Design Week, Mapei will be celebrating 80 years of manufacturing industry-leading products. Innovation through Research and Development is always at the forefront of Mapei’s philosophy.

Mapei x Harper Downie

Mapei are proud to collaborate with Harper Downie Architects for Clerkenwell Design Week, commissioning an original“L'albero arcobaleno”, The Rainbow Tree installation, exhibited at the Brew House Yard site. The installation forms part of a series route, runningbetween eight exhibition venues,from Farringdon Station to Spa Fields.The tree reflects a myriad of emotions and qualities; contemplation, relaxation, rest, decoration, momentum, embrace, play and feel, whilst also visually reinforcing Mapei’s proximity and commitment to nature. Visitors to the “L'albero arcobaleno” are encouraged to interact with the installation to experience these qualities; recline on the ‘sun lounger’ roots and touch the tactile sealant branches.

Salvatore Noviello, Senior Architect at Harper Downiecommented: “Thiscollaboration between Mapei and Harper Downie showcases the versatility and range of Mapei products and our own innovative, creative approach to design at any scale!Mapei products hold the construction industry together… literally. Emphasising the colourful and vibrant range of finishes available, this interactive installation presents the Mapei palette of products in ways not seen before.”

The installation is a focus on colour, in synthesis with Mapei’s theme for Clerkenwell Design Week. Collaboration and working together is a principle inherent to Mapei’s ethos, with this project reflecting Mapei’s strong relationship with architect practices and the wider specification supply chain.

Mapei products are used to form the ‘skin’ on the trunks and roots. The roots feature Mapefloor Comfort in RAL shades 5012 (sky blue) and 3020 (red), mixed to create different shadesfor use in this installation. The trunk features a selection of colours from Mapei’s popular coloured grout collections.Mapetherm Net Glass fibre mesh for thermal insulation and reinforcing coats, together with Mapesil AC silicone sealant, are weaved in and out of the ‘branches’ to create movement and interest, optimising the visitor experience.

Daniel Hopwood

Daniel Hopwood is the president of the British Institute of Interior Design and has run the leading high end residential interior design company, Studio Hopwood, for twenty years.

After graduating with a degree in Architecture, he joined the Prince of Wales Institute of Architecture. While Daniel specialises in Contemporary design, he does so with a deep understanding of the provenance of the building.

His work is featured in global publications as well as being a regular contributor to the British press, also tutoring in design and sharing specialised knowledge at trade shows and television programmes including the Channel 4 series, 'Britain's Best Homes' and most recently working alongside Sophie Robinson and Tom Dyckhoff in the 'The Great Interior Design Challenge' for BBC2.

Daniel is a great believer that good design should not be exclusive but instead should be made accessible to all.

Laura Perryman

Anticipating what’s next is imperative for any company to stay ahead when working in industries where aesthetics and tactility is the first thing consumers engage with.

Laura has over 10 years’ design experience as a colour, materials and trends forecaster, currently running consultancy Colour of Saying which specialising in future experiential design with colour and innovative materials.

Gathering inspiration from emerging technologies, new materials and consumer insights, Laura is a creative thinker in the field of colour, materials and design innovation to create on trend design solutions.

Ian Hunter

Materials Council was established by Ian Hunter, Brad Turner and founding partner Architonic. Ian and Brad are highly qualified industrial designers and former materials researchers at Foster + Partners architects.

Here they kept the practice abreast of developments in architectural materials and technologies, operating the world’s largest materials library advising architects on material selection, implementation and sustainability working directly on a number of prestigious international projects including the new Apple campus, the Masdar Institute of Technology and Spaceport America.

Ian has participated in a number of forums and events including the UKTI’s Materials Knowledge Transfer Network as well as global other material and design shows.

Harper Downie are an architects practice located a stone’s throw away from Mapei’s Specification Centre in Clerkenwell. Harper Downie pride themselves on being a creative architectural practice working across local, national and global boundaries bringing fresh thinking and a dynamic approach to design.Harper Downie shares these qualities with Mapei, leading to a natural collaboration for one of the world’s most high profile design festivals.
