Colonists Were People Who Lived in the American Colonies but Still Had to Follow British Laws

DED Part 1-3:

Pirate Diary: Quote / What it means to me
“Even the king’s men who search the ships ignore contraband as long as we give ‘em a share.”( pg 13: paragraph 2) / Reaction: This makes sense that the kings are so greedy that instead of following the law, they ignore it as long as they get something they want.
“Saw a man flogged”.(pg 17: paragraph 3) / Cause: The drain that holds the water had a leak in it and the captain thought the man was pumping too slowly.
“To check his sums, Noah finds our latitude: how far we have traveled north or south.”(pg 18: paragraph 3) / Question: Did these men go to school to learn how to sail and know what direction to go? Who taught them?
What If You Met a Pirate? Quote / What it means to me
“The entire crew voted on important questions. A pirate captain was elected by his own men and they could fire him.” (pg 6) / Reaction: I like that pirate captains could be voted on or fired. This shows that pirates had some form of government and rules on their ships.
“Pirates didn’t want to match their little boats guns with the navy’s big guns.”(pg 10) / Inference: Pirates usually were squished into boats like dogs. This was because they didn’t have big guns so they wanted to surprise other ships with the amount of people instead.
Pirate Diary: Quote / What it means to me
“In fact my “punishment” was more of a rest than a hardship.” (pg 21: paragraph 1) / Connection: Sometimes it does seem that punishment was rest when I was younger. I would go to sleep which really didn’t teach me a lesson.
“The pirates had taken over our ship.”( pg 23:paragraph 2) / Cause: The pirate ship had tricked them with a fake Dutch flag and had taken it down to show that they were pirates. Many of the shipmates took their own men captive and were happy that the ship was taken over.
“Now that we have three times the people on board the ship is very crowded.”(pg 27: paragraph 1) / Question: Won’t there be more fighting and flogging now that there are more people on board?
What If You Met a Pirate: Quote / What it means to me
“His special duty was navigation-knowing the vessels location at all times.” (pg 16) / Inference: It seems like the captain would be the master of the ship, but since he wasn’t it seems like the master would not follow his orders and just take over and do what he wanted.
“Pirates weren’t bloodthirsty as their legends would have you believe-but lets be truthful they were violent, wicked criminals.” (pg. 18) / Opinion: They seemed to be bloodthirsty because they would shoot at sailors and look at them as a prize. They also would aim at the pirate ant the men steering in order to make the ship go off course so they could get the prizes they wanted.
Pirate Diary: Quote / What it means to me
“You shall guard the boats on the shore until we return.” (pg 38: paragraph 4) / Opinion:I think this was one of the most dangerous jobs, Jake could be killed by anyone who saw him and he didn’t have very much to protect himself from others.
“Saul told me that one of my pistol balls flew wide of the mark, but the other hit the capitanos shoulder: thus was Saul’s life spared and the capitano quickly captures.” (pg 39: paragraph 5) / Connection: Many people in everyday life seem to feel that they are too small or weak to help. They don’t feel that they have the courage until the actual situation happens. Adrenaline kicks in and they can do more than they think. This is what happened to Jakewhen he shot his pistol.
“The ship let out a terrible groan.” ( pg 49; paragraph 3) / Explanation of personification: There was a bad storm that damaged parts of the ship and made it seem as if the ship was in pain.
What If You Met a Pirate: Quote / What it means to me
“The large nations of the world and their navies ran down the pirates and hanged them.” (pg. 30: paragraph 1) / Connection: There are still pirates today and it does affect trade in our country. They have recently been in the news the past few years. I find this kind of scary and I think they should be punished but not by hanging them.
“Old Pirates were rare”( pg 31) / Question: How did people really find out pirates? Was it through word of mouth from old pirates?

Part 4:

  1. Colonists were people who lived in the American colonies but still had to follow British laws.
  2. The Navigation Acts said that the colonies were not allowed to sell their own products to other nations. This was a way for England to make money off of the colonies. They had to pay taxes on items that came from over seas.
  3. They were unhappy and this led to the American Revolution in 1776. They felt that the prices were unfair.
  4. Pirates who smuggled in goods without paying taxes supplying goods to the settlers.
  5. The pirates and colonists had a good relationship. Some were even financed by businessmen who gave them fake letters of marquee.
  1. There are many different kinds of pirates, but all of them wanted to earn some kind of reward. Seadogs worked for Queen Elizabeth I and they harassed Spain, but not directly. Buccaneers were pirates who really had no other place to go and they had a reputation for being very cruel. Bootleggers helped the colonists by bringing them goods.
  2. I really like the bootleggers because they seem to actually help people. Even though it is illegal not to pay taxes on goods these rules seemed unfair so I feel that in a small way they were helping.
