A study published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence* connects young adults’ use of video games to poorer relationships with friends and family.
Study participants reported on how often they play video games. They also answered questions measuring relationship quality, including how much time, trust, support and affection they share with friends and parents.
Statistical analyses revealed that the more young adults play video games, the more frequent their involvement in risky behaviors like drinking and drug abuse. For young women, self-worth was low if their video game time was high.
The lead author of the study said that“Relationship quality is one of a cluster of things that we found to be modestly associated with video games. The most striking part is that everything we found clustered around video game use is negative.”
Something to think about as we evaluate how the time our children spend playing video games impacts our family relationships.

I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.
I will not refuse to do the something I can do.”
