EDUCATION COURSE SEQUENCE

This sequence prepares a student for Student Teaching through planning learning activities within the classroom and understanding the learning development of a specific age. Students will integrate and apply knowledge from their entire program while teaching in collaboration with experienced teachers in the public schools with University

guidance and supervision.

Students will begin the Education Course Sequence after the following requirements have been met:

·  Completed 60 semester credit hours

·  Earned a 2.5 cumulative GPA overall

·  Major teaching field and second teaching field must have 2.5 accumulative GPA respectively.

·  All major teaching field, second teaching field, and Pedagogy (CI, RDG, ECE, SPED) classes must have 2.5 GPA with no grade lower than a “C”.

Step One: Methods Courses (Education Core)

Education Core must be completed with “C” or better the semester prior to the Field Based Block. Additional courses may be completed at this time.

Contact College of Science advisor for Science or Math courses to enroll while taking education core classes.

Apply for a Secondary Field Based Block (High School Block) placement prior to registration for the upcoming semester. An application is required. Refer to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction website at www.education.txstate.edu/ci (Field-Based Block Application Information) for more information.

Step Two: Field Based Block (High School Block)

The Field Based Block courses must be taken together as a group. Only available during the Fall and Spring semesters. Must be completed with “C” or better the semester prior to Student Teaching. Additional courses may be completed at this time.

RDG 3323 Teaching Reading in the Content Areas

A.  Additional Field Based Block Information:

Choose either a 3 OR 2 course Block (2 course block includes RDG 3323 as a separate course and completed at same time

as block).

·  3 course field block: scheduled on M/W or T/H, 8 am-3:30 pm at a designated local school.

·  2 course field block: scheduled on M/W or T/H, 8 am-12:30 pm at a designated local school with RDG 3323 taken concurrently on campus.

·  Students will satisfy their field experience requirement during the Field Based Block (High School Block).

·  Professor will contact students via Texas State e-mail or letter before the start of the semester to provide additional information (classroom location, time, etc.) regarding courses.

·  Please enroll in other Field based courses that should be combined with Field Block.

B.  Attend Student Teacher Roundup at the beginning of the long semester prior to the student teaching semester. For dates and locations refer to the Office of Educator Preparation website at www.education.txstate.edu/oep/ST.html. This meeting is MANDATORY and begins the Student Teaching Application process.

C.  Take required practice TExES exams (Content Area and Pedagogy & Professional Responsibility) after attending the Student Teacher Round-Up.

Step Three: Student Teaching

Final semester after all coursework has been completed. Only available during the Fall and Spring semesters. 13

weeks, full-time, Monday-Friday, unpaid.

EDST 4681 Undergraduate Student Teaching 8-12

Must meet all prerequisites:

 2.5 Overall GPA

 2.5 GPA in all teaching fields (major and second teaching fields)

 All courses in teaching field must be completed with “C” or better.

 All Teacher Education courses (CI 3325, 4332, 4343, 4370, RDG 3323) must be completed with “C” or better.

 English 1310 and 1320 must be completed with “C” or better.

A.  Clear Tentatives with the Office of Educator Preparation (ED 2016) by the stated deadline or you will be dropped from Student Teaching. The Student Teaching Tentatives packet lists all requirements (Pedagogy and teaching field coursework, prerequisites as stated above, specific grades, GPA) before student teaching may be approved. This includes other requirements as determined by your major department of your major. This is not an approval for graduation.

B.  Attend a Mandatory Student Teaching Meeting at the beginning of the semester. Expectations, policies, and procedures for Student Teaching will be discussed. Students will also receive their final placements and meet their university supervisors www.education.txstate.edu/oep/ST.html

C.  Apply for graduation online through CatsWeb (under Academic Record – Apply for Graduation) during the first week of classes.

D.  Take required TExES exams. (Information is given to students at the Student Teacher Round Up) Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility (PPR) and Content Area tests are required. Practice tests must be completed before students will be given approval to register for the TExES/ExCET (real exam). Refer to the Office of Educator Preparation (www.education.txstate.edu/oep) for more information.

E.  Upon completion of all certification requirements (student teaching, graduation, and passing scores on required TExES exams), apply for certification on-line. Refer to the Office of Educator Preparation (www.education.txstate.edu/oep/certification/apply-for-certification.html) for more information.
