Associate Dean for Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs

Within USF Health, the COM’s mission is to provide an outstanding education delivered by excellent faculty and to create and disseminate knowledge that advances healthcare by aggressively pursuing both basic and clinical research. The College comprises over 650 faculty who serve over 450 medical and over 150 graduate students and over 100 postdoctoral fellows. The SBBS is housed within the COM and serves the research and medical and graduate education needs of the College.

THE POSITION:

The Associate Dean for Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs is responsible for the maintenance and continued development of the SBBS’s Graduate Program and Postdoctoral Training activities; the former spanning the education continuum and including Certificate, Master’s and Doctoral students. The Associate Dean participates in College planning activities and is responsible for the office’s budget, development and allocation of resources. Reporting to the Vice Dean for Research, Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in the SBBS, the Associate Dean has full administrative and fiscal responsibility for the successful operation of the various components of the graduate program. In addition, the Associate Dean provides leadership with respect to the vision of graduate education within the College/School through shared academic governance, is responsible for identifying and recommending institutional responses to new trends in higher education and postdoctoral training and is charged with the development of new program initiatives that seek to expand graduate student access and enrollment in the SBBS and increase the number of postdoctoral trainees.

While this full-time position has a primary administrative component, the Associate Dean is encouraged to maintain an active involvement in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and in extramurally funded research. The position also requires service to the academic and professional communities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum requirements include an earned doctorate in one of the biomedical sciences from an accredited institution, five years experience at the Associate Professor Level and a proven record of excellence in grantsmanship and competitive support from NIH or other extramural agency. Experience in a senior administrative capacity with budget authority and in strategic planning, development and promotion of graduate and certificate programs in the biomedical sciences is required. A demonstrated commitment to graduate education and postdoctoral training, the ability to promote and function successfully in an environment of collaborative collegiality and diversity and knowledge of trends and issues challenging higher education are is also a must.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in the development and administration of interdisciplinary graduate programs at the Master’s and Doctoral levels. Evidence of success in securing extramural funds for the support of either graduate education or postdoctoral training programs. Experience or interest in the development of electronic “on-line” and distance education courses in health-related subjects to expand access to SBBS’s graduate education activities. Evidence of or interest in the development of both interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs within SBBS, the COM, USF, USF Health, and its affiliated partners.
