College Now Applied Technical Math 2

2017-2018

This is an intermediate class in applied math. It is equivalent to Math 096 in the Oregon University System. College credit through Rogue Community College is available for this course, but not required. The math skills taught in this class are roughly equivalent to those taught in Algebra 2.

Book

No book will be passed out for this class, which makes it very important to take good notes. I recommend using a comp book or spiral notebook. A copy of the text for this class will be available on the school’s website.

Calculators

You will need to use an application called Desmos for this class. It is available for all smartphones, and there will be chromebooks available in the classroom if access to a phone is not available.

Personal Electronics

Your cell phone should be out of sight (and your hands) unless you are using Desmos.

There are to be no headphones on or earbuds in when the teacher is teaching or going over problems. Laptop computers may be used, but if they are not being used for classroom purposes, then they are subject to the rules above.

Classroom Rules

All students are expected to act like mature young adults. Disruptions during class time will not be tolerated, since this is a college-level class.

All opinions and statements are to be respected in the classroom. There should be no harassment at Cottage Grove HS, and this, as well as all other school rules, applies to our classrooms.

Food will be allowed in the room unless the mess or tardies directly after lunch becomes a problem. Drinks in resealable containers may be consumed in class. Gum is fine, as long as it is not attached to the bottom of the furniture.

Tardies

This class will use the school’s tardy policy as outlined in the student-parent handbook. Long story short: Be on time.

Class Grading

You will be graded on the following:

Homework & Activity Problems (50%) Homework will be assigned for each section. The importance of keeping up with your homework cannot be overemphasized. Homework will be graded for correctness and completeness. It will almost always be reviewed in class.

Tests and Quizzes (50%) There will be a test at the end of each chapter, so two per trimester. The tests will usually be open-calculator, but not open phone or open neighbor. Quizzes will occur at the end of each section. You will have enough advance warning about due dates for packets that LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. If you KNOW you’re going to be absent on the day packets are due, make arrangements with the teach ahead of time.

Makeup tests are possible for full credit in cases of excused absence, and must be done outside of class time, as soon as possible after the administration of the test. No make-up tests will be given due to low scores.

RCC Stuff

It is possible to get credit for Math 096 through Rogue Community College by completing the class. The 096 final and college credit will be given at the end of winter trimester. It will be required for you to enroll at RCC to receive this credit, but there will be help availble for this enrollment. Grading for the RCC class is based on 60% your high school class grade (for both trimesters) and 40% your score on the final exam. There should be adequate time for you to drop the class if staying enrolled in it at RCC would result in a low grade.

Grading Scale

This is the grading scale for applied math:

A: 90% and higher

B: 80%-89%

C: 70%-79%

D: 60%-69%

Online Resources

Assignments will be posted to the school’s website. It is recommended that you subscribe.

Topics to be Covered

Each chapter essentially consists of three sections. Section 1 involves an introduction to the type of function covered and graphing. Section 2 introduces the equation of the function and how to solve problems involving the equation. Section 3 involves using technology to write functions to describe the data.

Chapter 1: Linear Functions

Chapter 2: Quadratic Functions

Chapter 3: Power Functions

These will be covered first trimester.

Chapter 4: Exponential Functions

Chapter 5: Logarithmic Functions

Chapter 6: Choosing the Right Equation and Miscellaneous Functions.

These will be covered second trimester, with a review and Math 096 final occurring as well.

During third trimester, various topics from Math 105 at Lane Community College will be covered. Last year we covered elections, apportionment and graph theory during third trimester. There will be no college credit third trimester.
