Full Time/1700 service hours
The College Coaching Corps AmeriCorps Member housed within the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Life at the University of Michigan-Dearborn will serve as an educator, facilitator and advocate of college access through the development, expansion, and management of programs and initiatives designed to build a college-going culture in the surrounding community. The AmeriCorps Member will enhance college access efforts by building and sustaining relationships with community organizations and actively engaging college students in service to youth to promote college readiness and awareness.
The College Coaching Corp AmeriCorps Member’s service will involve:
- Recruiting, training, and motivating undergraduate students to serve as “college positive volunteers” and to become active participants in MPACT (Mentors Promoting Access to College and Training), a newly developed program to engage college volunteers in service to youth-serving community organizations.
- Identifying and coordinating service opportunitiesfor MPACT members to facilitate college readiness and college success activities on-site at youth-serving community organizations or schools.
- Planning and conducting at least one community service project that will involve volunteers in direct service to youth at a community site.
- Developing a plan to transition MPACT into a student-led, self-sustaining campus organization.
- Working to fully integrate MPACT into the University’s Community Involvement and Volunteerism Centers (The CIViC) portfolio of volunteer opportunities and establishing the CIViC as MPACT’s volunteer headquarters.
- Providing “college positive volunteerism” training to various student groups already involved in serving youth.
- Enhancing relationships with established UM-Dearborn community partners and identifying opportunities for sustainable college access service projects; supporting Project A.C.E., a the Local College Access Network, by attending monthly meetings, providing college access resources and volunteers.
- Acting as a representative of the university to community organizations as new partnerships are established.
- Facilitating college readiness/success activities for K-12 school groups and youth programs visiting campus.
- Conducting workshops and attending community events, fairs, programs and meetings to promote college readiness/success and college access resources such as knowhow2go.com and the Michigan College Access Portal.
- Developing and maintaining a college resource “toolbox” to include age-specific handouts, web sites, interactive group activities, and presentations.
- Attending Admissions staff meetings and providing regular project updates.
- Attending and participating in all AmeriCorps and Mentor Michigan College Coaching Corps trainings and events.
Supervisor
This position will be supervised by the Assistant Director of Admissions (site supervisor) and the College Coaching Corps Program Director.
Required Qualifications:
- College experience (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
- Strong interest and experience in community service
- Commitment to college access and success
- Knowledge and interest in interacting with students and diverse groups of people
- Proven leadership ability, public speaking and event planning
- Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to make a full‐year, full-time (40 hours per week) commitment
- Possession of valid driver’s license and transportation to travel to off-campus sites
- Willingness to submit to a comprehensive criminal background check, including an FBI fingerprint check
