Collaboration between MOSMA and the University of Winnipeg Film Department

MOSMA (Mid-Ocean School of Media Arts) is a post-secondary vocational school for Audio Production, including Sound Design for Film. The program, Audio in Media runs from Sept. to June.By the end of March, MOSMA will have 6 Sound Design students with an advanced skill-set who would benefit by having a film project to begin sound post-production on.

U of W Film students, especially in Filmmaking I, usually do not have a completed sound-edit done on their films by the end of term in April. It seems that both MOSMA students and U of W students would benefit by acollaboration between our two programs.

The University of Winnipeg Film Department has entered into a agreement with MOSMA whereby U of W film students will have an opportunity to have students at MOSMA do a sound cut and mix on their films. The proposal is simple: that 6 students from MOSMA be paired with 6 students from the U of W film program who have completed a short film with no post-production sound work done. Students at U of W interested in participating in this program will submit their films to The University of Winnipeg Film Department. If more than 6 students submit an application they will be adjudicated and 6 will be chosen to work with MOSMA students to complete sound post-production on their film.

There is no money involved in the collaboration from either side.

This will be a collaborative effort, with both Sound Designer and Film Director providing input on the sound design.

Benefits to MOSMA students:

•Students will have a picture-lock project to work on

•Students will gain experience of working and collaborating with a Director/Producer

•Students will get a credit as Sound Editor on a film

Benefits to U of W students

•Students will get a Stereo and 5.1 mix of their film

•Students will work with a Sound Designer and gain the experience of

collaborating on sound post-production for their film

Students whose projects are selected will provide MOSMA with a picture-lock movie file and all of the appropriate sound elements and media files associated with the film.

Timeline for project: March 26 toMay 31

U of W students will submit their applications to The U of W Film Department by March 26 and 6 projects will be selected to be matched with MOSMA students. Students will be paired (MOSMA can decide how to match their students to our projects) and paired students can begin discussions on the sound design of the film.

U of W students wishing to have a musical score for their films must provide the score. The score must be original music or free on-line music with no copyright restrictions.

U of W students must give appropriate acknowledgement of the MOSMA student as Sound Editor/Mixer in the credits section of their films.
