Coin Hoard statistics project.

Begin using only Thompson, Markholm, Kraay volume.

All archaic and classical hoards and Hellenistic hoards down to (but not including) 300 B.C. According to my run-through, that means the following ranges (hoard nos.), for a total of 827 hoards (feel free to correct errors, of course, if these don’t seem right):

1-115

354-435

689-837

981-1061

1152-1282

1361-65

1394-96

1421

1436-43

1468-71

1478-1517

1632-1674

1733

1747-58

1789-90

1792

1830

1872-1943

2059-2149

2259-64

Regions (with my prelimiary count of number of hoards):

1 Greece 114

2 Macedonia and North 80

3 Thrace and Euxine 147

4 South Russia 79

5 Asia Minor 148

6 Levant and the East 54

7 Egypt and North Africa 46

8 Italy 70

9 Sicily 89

Date ranges (Date 1):

Use this range for all hoards that can be dated within a quarter-century, more or less. Take your best shot (being consistent) with rough ranges; e.g. “early fourth century” = 7. “mid-fourth century” is 8 or 9 – try to distribute evenly (e.g. every other one like this is a 9).

1 550-525

2 524-500

3 499-475

4 474-50

5 449-425

6 424-400

7 399-375

8 374-350

9 349-325

10 324-300

Date ramges (Date 2)

Use this date range for very roughly dated hoards, e.g. those in which the hoard is only dated to a half-century or rougher (400-350), and those for which only a century date is offered.

1 6th century

2 5th century

3 4th century

Total number of coins in hoard: list if a number is given, ignoring annotations like + (so 160+ = 160). If only very rough indication “large number” indicated, leave blank.

Numbers of coins in each hoard for the following list of poleis only (listed here regionally; there may be an easier way, e.g. by Head’s order, which is used to list coins in hoards by polis in Thompson et al.).

Count is simple number of coins: Ignore difference btw AE, AR, AU. Ignore demoninations.

Ignore ? (Miletus? 2 = Miletus 2).

For approximate counts, take average of range (e.g. 20-30 = 25). If “3 or 4” take lower number, unless the total adds up to the higher number (as in hoard no. 5)

When coins present, but no exact or even approximate count given, list 1 (in bold italics), or 2 etc. if there is indication of multiple demonimations, etc. E.g. hoard 9.

Use your best judgement throughout – e.g. on hoard 10, I’ve listed 23 for Ertetria, for reasons that will I hope be clear when you think about it.
