COG-Ottawa Farm Tours 2012 (Rain or Sun)

Chelsea Area Evening Tour–Wednesday 11thJuly, 2012

Time:6.30 pm. Brad Wright and Leela Ramachandran manage ChelseaGardens on the Hedrick Farm development in Chelsea, QC. In 2012, they are growing 2 acres of vegetables and herbs, including over 40 types and 80 varieties. Theye use organic seeds and production methods, focusing on heirloom seed varieties chosen for quality, flavour and diversity.

Their produce is harvested fresh and marketed directly to local eaters through farmer's markets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and a farm gate stand. See as well as the Hendrick Farm website,

Directions: Heading north on Hwy 5 from Ottawa/Gatineau, take the Old Chelsea Road exit and turn left. Just after crossing over Hwy 5, you will pass a driveway leading to the old farmhouse at 165 Old Chelsea. Right after their driveway is a road called Chelbrook. Turn left onto Chelbrook and then left again onto a gravel road that leads to the barn. Park and meet in front of the barn.

There is no charge for the tour, but a voluntary donation will be gratefully accepted by COG-Ottawa, and will be put towards our ongoing costs of operating our chapter, including organizing farm tours.$10 per person is suggested.

Jasper Area Tour Sunday 19th August, 2012

First Farm 10:00 am:Jasper Apple Farm is run by Ted Turner and Mary Bayes. It is a ‘pick your own’ apple orchard and this year they are celebrating their 32nd year.In addition to apples they grow a wide array of certified organic produce. Besides supplying many local restaurants, they sell their organic produce at the farm. Their season is quite long as they have been able to extend the growing season through the use of garden domes and a greenhouse.

Directions: Go south through the village of Merrickville, then take the right fork onto County Road 16 towards Jasper. Jasper Apple farm is about 5 minutes from Merrickville, at #1629, County Road 16.

Picnic lunch 12:30 pm: Bring-your-own picnic lunch, which can be enjoyed at the Jasper Apple Farm, or alternatively, retrace your steps to Merrickville and find lunch in one of the many restaurants in the village.

Second farm 2:00 pm: Samantha Hart and Aaron Klinck run Funny Duck Farm, a certified organic livestock farm, specializing in pasture raised heritage pork as well as chicken. They also make and sell herbal teas and tinctures, and can supply a variety of other organic products.

Directions: From Jasper Apple Farm, continue south on County Road 16 through Jasper. Just after Jasper, turn left onto County Road 7, cross Line 5 (Kinch)/Arnold Road, then Leacock/Crystal Bates Road, then turn left on Line 8 (formerly Morrison) Road; Funny Duck Farm is about 100 m down Line 8 (Morrison) Road.
