WORKBOOK ASSIGNMENTS
You must complete a series of laboratory assignments in the “Cuaderno de Trabajo” (workbook) for each chapter, 10 through 13. Some of these assignments require that you listen to audio exercises and then answer questions about them in your workbook. Listening comprehension is a very important element of the entire course, and indeed of learning any language. The more you listen, the better your comprehension.
You can buy your own student audiocassette program or the equivalent CD program which accompanies the workbook exercises and the text book vocabulary. These sets of cassettes or CD’s are sold separately from the textbook.. There will also be copies of the cassette tapes on reserve at the BCC Library. Alternatively, the audio program can also be downloaded from the WEB at .
VIDEO TO ACCOMPANY DOS MUNDOS– Please note that in order to view the Videoteca segments on the Web you must use a computer with a cable modem or DSL in order to run the Real Player 8 application.
To view the Videoteca segments in the BCC Library, go to the Media Distribution Desk, first floor in Bankier Library, ask for the Dos Mundos Video Program – the DVD for all four levels is under call number PC 4137 D 67 2003; the video tape is PCVT 11 (which begins with Chapter 8.)
Grading Standard:
EVALUATION
In this class, testing serves two purposes: to help determine grades and to evaluate the progress of students. The oral and written tests evaluate your ability to understand and communicate messages in Spanish as well as your command of the cultural content of the units
There are four traditionally identified communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You will be tested on these skills as well as on vocabulary and structure (grammar) which are basic tools for the acquisition of linguistic competency.
TESTING WILL BE DONE AS FOLLOWS:
- Written vocabulary and grammar quiz on Chapter 10
( to be taken at the TestingCenter)25 points
- Oral “in-class” dialog on topic from Chapter 1025 points
- Review test on Chapters 10 & 11, including sections on
listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar,
vocabulary and writing (to be done at the TestingCenter)
and a speaking section, which will be done with the instructor
in a personal interview. 100 points
- Written vocabulary and grammar quiz on Chapter 12
(Testing Center)25 points
- Oral “in-class” dialog on topics from Chapter 1225 points
- Review test (see above) on Chapter 12 & 13 100 points
ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY 30 points
If you are absent you may obtain credit for the missed class by attending another section of the same course.
Being latetwice counts as one absence.
CLASS PARTICIPATION - based on willingness to participate in group and individual interactions in class; includes completion of a Special Project to be agreed upon with the instructor.

HOMEWORK – completed and handed in on time to receive full credit.
- “Blue pages” – 4 assignments – 4 points each 16 points
- Workbook Chapters – 4 assignments – 7 points each with possibility of maximum of four extra points per chapter 28 points

GRADING STANDARD:
All written tests and quizzes are to be taken at the TestingCenter. The Speaking section of each test will be done in an interview with the instructor. Tests and quizzes must be taken within the prescribed time period.
For each week a test is late, 5 points will be deducted from your score.
For quizzes – 2 points per week.
Department Policies:
RE-TESTING
If you do not pass an oral or written test the first time you take it, you may re-takeit one more time. The procedure for re-taking is as follows:
- Work with a tutor on the test you failed.
- Obtain a re-test permission slip from your instructor.
- Go to the testing center, present the slip, and make sureyou are given the
re-test version of the test or quiz you are re-taking.
PLEASE NOTE - that re-testing is principally designed to help those who fail a test. The maximum grade that can be achieved on a re-test is 79%. (Students with grades lower that 79% on the first version of the test or quiz who would like to raise their grade to a maximum of 79% are also eligible for a re-test if desired.)
Your final grade will be based on the number of points you have received on the above criteria. However, you must have accumulated 210 points on the test and quizzes (equivalent to 70%) before any homework, attendance, or participation points are added to your grade.
Any student who averages 65%-69% on tests and quizzes will receive a “D” grade for the course. Homework, attendance and participation points will not raise the “D” grade.
PLEASE NOTE: IF YOUR FINAL GRADE IN THE COURSE IS A “D” YOU WILL PASS THE COURSE BUT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE TO A HIGHER LEVEL IN THIS LANGUAGE.
In this course you may achieve: A = 90% - 100% = 363 - 404 points
B+ = 85% - 89% = 343 - 362 points
B = 80% - 84% = 323 - 342 points
C+ = 75% - 79% = 302 - 322 points
C = 70% - 74% = 282 - 301 points
D = 65% - 69%= 262 - 281 points
F = Less than 65% = 261 points or lower
During the last 2 weeks of the semester (or the last week in Summer semesters,) testing on Chapters 12 & 13 ONLY will be allowed. All other tests, oral and written, MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THIS DATE.
If you have NOT completed the course requirements by the end of the semester, but have successfully completed at least through chapter 12, you may apply for an “Incomplete.” Your instructor will explain this procedure during the last 2 weeks of the semester.
