WORKBOOK ASSIGNMENTS

You must complete a series of assignments in the “Cahier d’exercices” (workbook) for each chapter, four through eight. Most of these assignments require that you listen to recorded exercises and then answer questions about them in you workbook. Listening comprehension is a very important element of the entire course, and indeed of learning any language. The more you listen, the better your comprehension.

You will need to buy your own student Audio Cassette program or the equivalent CD program which accompanies the workbook exercises. These tapes are available at Brookdale’s College Store.

The tapes are also available in the multi-media section of the BCC Library. Ask for “FRENCH 203” materials.

Grading Standard:

EVALUATION

In this class, testing serves two purposes: to help determine grades and to evaluate the progress of students. The oral and written tests evaluate your ability to understand and communicate messages in French.

There are four traditionally identified communications skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You will be tested on these skills as well as on vocabulary, culture and structure (grammar), which are basic tools for the acquisition of linguistic competency.

C = 70% - 74% = 304 to 325 points

D = 65% - 69% = 282 to 303 points

F = Less than 65% = 281 points or lower

All written tests are to be taken at the TestingCenter. The oral tests will be done in an interview with the instructor. Tests must be taken within one weekof the date listed on the semester plan. Failure to do so will result in the loss of 5 points for every week a test is not completed.

Please note: When you ask for a test in the Testing Center, it is your responsibility to request it exactly as it is listed on your semester plan. e.g. “Test on Chapter 9.”

Department Policies:

RE-TESTING

If you do not pass an oral or written test the first time you take it, you may re-takeit one more time. The procedure for re-taking is as follows:

  1. Work with a tutor on the test you failed.
  2. Obtain a re-test permission slip from your instructor or tutor.
  3. Go to the testing center, present the slip, and make sureyou are given the

re-test version, (Version II) of the test or quiz you are re-taking.

PLEASE NOTE: Re-testing is principally designed to help those who fail a test.

The maximum grade that can be achieved on a re-test is 79%. (Students with grades lower than 79% on the first version of the test who would like to raise their grade to a maximum of 79%

are also eligible for a re-test if desired.)

Your final grade will be based on the number of points you have received on the above criteria. However, you must have accumulated 227 points on tests (equivalent to 70%) before any homework, attendance, or participation points are added to your grade.

Any student who averages 65%-69% on tests and quizzes will receive a “D” grade for the course. Homework, attendance and participation points will not raise the “D” grade.

During the last 2 weeks of the semester, testing on Chapters 12 & 13 ONLY will be allowed. All other tests, oral and written, MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THIS DATE.

If you have NOT completed the course requirements by the end of the semester, but have successfully completed at least through Chapter 11, you may apply for an “Incomplete.” Your instructor will explain this procedure during the last 2 weeks of the semester.

IF YOUR FINAL GRADE IN THE COURSE IS A “D” YOU WILL PASS THE COURSE BUT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE TO A HIGHER LEVEL IN THIS LANGUAGE.
