The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Course Overview: Students will engage in activities that will assist them in reading, writing, listening, and speaking Spanish. The course will cover vocabulary, grammar and will connect the culture of Spanish speaking counties. Since learning a language is a continuous process, each chapter will build on the information covered in previous chapters.

Themes covered in this course(subject to change)

  • Geography, greetings/introductions, time, dates, weather expressions, likes/dislikes, personal/physical descriptions,
  • Subject pronouns, present tense –ar verbs, location, classroom objects, the verb “estar”
  • Foods and beverages, -er and -ir verbs, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, question words, the verb “ser”
  • Places within the community, the verb “ir”, stem-changing verbs

Requirements and Expectations: The grade earned in this class is directly linked to the efforts and actions of the students in the classroom. In order to succeed, it is vital for students to do all homework assignments, participate in daily activities, study daily, and use Spanish as much as possible in their daily lives and classroom.

Make-up Work: Students will be able to make up missed assignments if they were absent. Each student has one week to complete the assignments for full credit. After one week, the student will be allowed to make up the work for half credit. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any missing assignments.These assignments can be provided by the teacher or in the make-up folder in the classroom.

Discipline: Students are to follow both school and class rules. Consequences for misbehavior are as followed:

  1. Verbal Warning
  2. Time Out( in which the student will be given a written assignment to complete for that day)
  3. Lunch Detention/Written notice to parent and follow up phone call
  4. Administrative detention
  5. After school detention
  6. Administrative referral with all parent contact documentation

Tutorials: Tutorials will be held on Fridaysfrom 7:00am-7:50am Students must have a note from a parent no later than the Wednesday before tutorial giving the student permission to stay for tutorial.

Classroom Expectations:

  1. Ready Rule: Come to class ready to learn with all supplies (paper, pencil, folder, homework and positive attitude in hand.
  2. Respect Rule: Respect the rights and property of others.
  3. Request and Offer Rule: Ask for help when needed and Offer help to others
  4. Responsibility Rule: Strive to act responsible at all times.

Keeping the classroom a safe and positive learning environment:

  1. Staying in your seat at all times unless given verbal permission by the teacher to leave your seat.
  2. Entering the classroom silently and starting your warm-up upon arrival/or waiting for instruction.
  3. There should be no talking unless in partner activities or asking questions to teacher (after hand has be raised and called upon).
  4. No gum chewing  we are constantly speaking Spanish.
  5. No snacks except for water (this includes candy etc.)
  6. NO throwing or asking to throw anything away during the classroom instruction.
