PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
On behalf of The St. Edward Staff we would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of our students and families as we begin the 2012 – 2013 school year. I would like to extend a special welcome to all of the new students and their families. I’m certain that you will settle in quickly and feel part of the St. Edward School Community. I would also like to welcome our new staff including Mrs. Flaman, our vice-principal, Mrs. Laczynski, Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten teacher, Miss Molnar, Grade 2/3 teacher, Mrs. Joanette, core French, Mrs. Anderson , band teacher, Mrs. Meschishnick, teacher-librarian and Mr. Tahn, head caretaker. I am looking forward to working with all of you to make this year a success as the parish, parent community and school continue to work together to provide an excellent Catholic Education for our children.
Student Information Sheets
Please take a few minutes to fill in all the information on the White student information sheet, the green permission sheet and the red volunteer sheet you received at registration or that was brought home by your child. Return it to school as soon as possible. The green form is double sided and need to be signed by a parent/guardian and the student. These forms are essential for office and classroom use. The white sheet is our first source of all information in case of emergencies. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Morning Arrivals
The students are asked to arrive at school no earlier than 8:45 a.m. Students who are attending the Before and After School program may enter the school through the doors close to the parking lot. Students who need to arrive prior to 8:45 a.m. are asked to register with the Before and After School program. Teachers are involved in meetings or are preparing for the instructional day therefore supervision is not available prior to 8:45 a.m.
School Lockdown Practice
St. Edward will be having a practice school lockdown on Thursday, September 20th at 2:05 p.m. with our School resource Officer, Cst. Epp. Please see the ‘Working Together for Safe Schools’ handout coming home with today’s newsletter for further information on school lockdowns.
Student Absences
Parents are required to notify the school if their son/daughter will be late or absent. Our message manager is on 24 hours a day, so please call at any time and leave a message. Please include your child’s name, classroom teacher and the reason your child will be late or absent. If we have not received any word for an absent student, Mrs. Beuker will be calling you after 9:15 a.m. to establish your child’s whereabouts. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us to assure the safety of our students.
Student Allergy Alert
There are a number of students at St. Edward with life threatening allergies. These allergies included: Nuts, Tree Nuts, Eggs, Kiwi, Please refrain from sending any foods containing these items to school. If any nut products have been eaten at home, only soap and water works to effectively remove nut residue. St. Edward’s school has always been caring enough to make the effort to ensure the safety of all our children.
School Community Parent Council
Dear Parents or Guardians
Studies show that parental involvement in a child`s education is one of the most important factors in raising student self-esteem and academic achievement. Moreover, most experts agree that parental involvement should go beyond attendance at teacher conferences and open houses.
I realize, however, that each of our families is unique- with its own priorities, needs, talents and time constraints.
Some of our current families are in their final year to contribute volunteer ideas, while some have moved on to new schools. We need you more than ever to take on new roles within our school. Please consider the volunteer opportunities a St Edward School.
Those who are able and willing to help out with a few other parents can let us know at the Meet the Teacher Night on Monday, September 17th OR call the school and your interest will be passed on to the parents currently helping with the Council.
THIS MAY BE A GREAT TIME FOR A CHANGE !!
Welcome Back Meal & Meet the Staff Night
Next Monday, September 17th our parents/caregivers are invited to a Welcome Back Meal & Meet the Staff Night with the school staff and members of the St. Edward Catholic Schools Community Council at 5:45 pm in the school gym. Our parent volunteers from the Catholic School Community Council will be providing deli meats, buns, cheese, pickles and a few other goodies for a meal at 5:45 pm to 6:30 pm. Following the meal we will introduce the staff, share our school goals and say a few words on behalf of the parent volunteers from 6:30 pm to 6:45 pm. At approximately 6:45 pm, we have scheduled two fifteen minute informal sessions to visit the classroom and meet your child(ren)’s teacher(s). We do ask that if parents/caregivers have a concern and wish to speak to the teacher at length that they call the teacher to schedule an appointment where the focus can be on the concern with confidentiality and fewer distractions. This is also a great opportunity to let the teachers and Parent Council know if you would be interested in helping out as a Room Parent for your child’s classroom this year so if you are willing and able to help out a little or a lot please sign up, the more the merrier.
School Zones
Please be reminded of the reduced speed (30 km/h maximum) in school zones on weekdays from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. The few extra seconds can save a child from serious injury.
Bus Loading Zone
Please respect the bus loading zones in front of the school in the mornings, at 11:30 and at the end of the day.
Milk Sales
As in the past, milk will continue to be offered during the noon break at a cost of 75 cents ($.75). Milk tickets can be purchased at the office or students can pay directly at the milk cooler. The cost for the milk card is $15.00 and will be good for 20 cartons of milk.
Classroom Smudge Instruction
One of our learning improvement goals for our school this year is to increase student and staff knowledge and awareness around First Nations and Metis education. We have the privilege of having Delvin Kanewiyakiho, our Division’s First Nations Cultural Leader, lead the school in a Smudge and sharing his talents and knowledge with us on Monday, September 17th at 9:30 a.m. We hope to all be outside with Delvin for the Smudge but if the weather does not cooperate, we will use our gym.

Our school newsletter will be published every second Wednesday during the school year. A calendar of school events will be sent out at the end of each month for the following month. Classroom teachers will also be communicating with families through classroom letters.
Thank you to all the families that gave us their email address so that we can send out the newsletter this way. Emailing the newsletter is a great way to save trees and cut down on the amount of photocopying that is done at the school. It is also a way to make sure you are getting the newsletter the day it comes out whether your child is at or away from school. If you have not already done so and would like to receive the school newsletter by email please send your address to the office or email it to Mrs. Beuker at . The school newsletter can also be found on our website at www.scs.sk.ca/edw
Please take a moment to read each entire newsletter as they are very informative and keep you up to date on the activities occurring in the school.

Please bring in your phone books from home and tell all your family and friends that they can recycle their old phonebooks here at St. Edward School. Families are also encouraged to contact their place of work. The phonebooks can be dropped off at St. Edward School or at any recycling depot/bin. We have also picked up phonebooks from locations close to the school. If you are dropping off at a recycling depot/bin all you have to do is call us at the school and let us know how many were recycled. Let’s see how many we can recycle this year.
Crosswalks at Avenue P and 31st Street
For our students’ safety, please ensure students and families are crossing Avenue P in the designated crosswalks. Vehicles are not expecting students to run out across the street at any other location. Our yellow signs have helped with signalling vehicles to slow down in the school zone but it is important to model and teach students to be safe and aware of oncoming traffic.
