Chaplains Thoughts

Happy New Year to all. While we think about the joys of this holiday season – do we ever stop to consider how much the God of the universe loves us? Look at the beauty of nature, the love and trust in the face of a small child, and think about the goodness of so many people. And yet – we see crime, wars and mans inhumanity to man – and wonder – how is it possible to reconcile the Love of God with this mess? I cannot explain it but this I know: If you truly believe – you do not need an explanation and if not – there is no explanation you would accept.

December 1944

The 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, as continued from the previous newsletter.

On December 16, three German armies (more than a quarter-million troops) launched the deadliest and most desperate battle of the war in the poorly roaded, rugged, heavily forested Ardennes. The inexperienced U.S. 106th Division was nearly annihilated, but even in defeat helped buy time for Brigadier General Bruce C. Clarke’s brilliant defense of St.-Vith. A crucial German shortage of fuel and the gallantry of American troops fighting in the frozen forests of the Ardennes proved fatal to Hitler’s ambition to snatch, if not victory, at least a draw with the allies in the west. LT. General George S. Patton’s remarkable feat of turning the Third Army ninety degrees from Lorraine to relieve the besieged town of Bastone was the key to thwarting the German counteroffensive. The Battle of the Bulge was the costliest action ever fought by the U.S.- Army which suffered over 100,000 casualties.

Memory Boards

Our post has had installed a Memory Board at the post home on Curve St.

The names on the board are those veterans of Millis men killed or missing in WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. A second board contains the names of present Millis veterans.

It is our intention to continue this board by adding names of veterans in order to keep their memories alive.

A fee of $50.00 is required for the nameplate and the following is required: Name, DOB, and branch of service.

Please contact the Board Committee.
