Work-Time Activities (40 min) / No school / No school / Students close read a GOFOR writing prompt and answer questions to clarify details.
Closure Activity (10 min) / Students will summarize the opening paragraph of the GOFOR prompt.
Differentiation Strategies
(targeting student growth) / Students will be given an opportunity to work with a peer to work on the purpose questions for stanza 1 from the poem.
*Students will be provided with extra time to complete the assignment for the day.
*Teacher will check for understanding by reading the Ticket Out the Door responses.

Closure Activity (10 min) / Students discuss why they think the author chose fire as a symbol. / Students will self-evaluate using a rubric.
Differentiation Strategies
(targeting student growth) / Students identify what various symbols mean to them, and students form their own opinions about why the author chose fire as the symbol. / Students write about their own personal experiences, and back up their answers based on their choice of evidence.
