Clinical Teaching at ACC TCP

Internship (paid employee at first-year teaching pay) is the final step for completing TEA certification requirements. Clinical teaching is an alternative way to complete certification requirements(spending 14 weeks in the classroom). The last option is to take a Leave of Absence, complete all exams, and begin applying again in February.

Regarding clinical teaching, it is a great opportunity to be paired with a teacher, hopefully at a school of your choice. There are pros and cons. You might end up with a great teacher or a mediocre teacher, but searching for a consenting teacher usually pays off. As a clinical or intern teacher, you have ACC to support, intervene, advocate, and ensure that you have a pleasant experience.

Pros:Working with a teacher from the beginning of school or the second semester to see how policies and procedures are set in place and how students are trained. Being able to observe other teachers and gradually take on duties, eventually completing full-time duties and staying long enough to learn after your full teaching duties are completed.

Cons:Required research to seek placement, no payment, no promise of a teaching job upon completion.

Director Comments: I had a wonderful mentor teacher, but when I started teaching, I was still on my own, in a totally different school, with no support. Starting as a teacher of record gives you on-the-job-experience that is successful 99% of the time; you are paid and have a year under your belt. With TV training and experience, you should be able to secure a job and start teaching. I say, go for the internship when possible! You will learn as you go and have the benefit of working with more than just one or two teachers. If employment opportunities are not available, seriously consider clinical teaching or take a Leave of Absence.

Scout out the possibilitiesand request a teacher you know (and who has already agreed) to ensure a positive experience. Let us know your preferences so we can set it up by July.
