Class Updates

1st Years: 3rd Exam on Monday, 9 days after that is final. Will be busy. Organization of the block want to make biostats a sub-block of M2M.

2nd Years: Close to End of DEMS – Still selling Gala tickets. People are starting to get ready for Step 1 and how they want to study. We had a difficult start to the semester, but it has been a good semester overall. Mental health was one of our biggest concerns and we tried to address how to get resources and we have achieved that. For next semester will be important to maintain community.

3rdyears: Winter break is coming, harder to push as hard as they can. There isn’t much going on, but lots of shelf studying is happening. No one wants to go to ICC. Town hall meeting during ICC.

4th years: Currently, people are out on interviews. Some people match on December 18th – military, ENT and ophthalmology. Hard to review since everyone is all over.

Student Life Update:

  • Dean Kaye is leaving Dec. 22nd and there are 5 finalists to be interviewed. There won’t be someone in place by the time she leaves so Dean Garrity and Stephen Wolf will step in for 3 months. Job descriptions will change now that Terri Wood and Dean Kaye are leaving.
  • Student Interest Groups will go to Brena for now, but Sean will eventually take over.
  • Vicki Crites will be doing emails to the student body. For 4th years: board people are doing a step 3 “testing” – several schools have volunteered to test out Step 3 , like a “pre-look” at the exam.
  • There will be a Student Life Committee (like Curriculum Steering Committee) to help oversee the student life department. Potentially:
  • MSC President
  • MSTP Student
  • A 1st or 2nd Year
  • Will be chaired by Bob Anderson, Nicole Zender and Basic Science faculty member. Requirement is that they have an interest in student life.
  • Our ideas for this committee:
  • Co-presidents sit on the committee?
  • Two second year students?
  • No third years because of time commitments?
  • Maybe someone who is not involved with MSC? We already get our voices heard and could use other voices. Could be hard to require 3rd years, recruit students, etc.
  • Would bring in resource people as needed, could bring in a smaller number of representatives and bring other people.
  • Will probably meet more frequently at first, then meet once a month if it works out.
  • Will probably report through Faculty Senate – Dr. Anderson and Dean Kaye will be choosing which students. Dean Garrity will take our input back to toe group and potentially appoint students.
  • Proposal: drawn from or selected by MSC . Members will be sent to the committee.
  • Dean Kaye can tell us how many people, what they will be discussing, etc.

Committee Updates:

  • Branch Campus dean has been selected: It will be Dr. Eric Wallace. He will be on campus January 21st. This will affect the incoming first years most of all, but we will ask him to come to MSC to discuss how students will be involved with branch campus curriculum.
  • Innovations: two applications for the Innovations Award and
  • Met with a foundation for where we stand as far as SOS scholarship and endowment status.
  • Social Event in the spring, pay admission and buy your own drinks Alumni Mixer.
  • Finance committee: under-budget for student groups, talked about a spring event for the school like a spring fling depending on ticket sales.
  • Communications: HTML for student groups is up to date, just need
  • Exec Council:

Office Hours:

  • One person came to ask why MSC won’t sent information about the after party via official channels, we think that isn’t’ a good idea. They agree.

Winter Gala:

  • As of yesterday, 279 tickets were sold. 16 dollars a ticket for the online sale means event is essentially covered.
  • Final list on Friday Afternoon, extra list at the door since people will probably forget to print their receipt.
  • Food – will be a light fare event, not a sit down dinner. There will be a lot, but not a dinner’s worth.
  • Potentially circulate menu and alcohol? Could make food a little scarce. Can help encourage people to drink responsibly?
  • Faculty members did get an email about this last night
  • Toys for Tots: Erik has boxes for collection. Hasn’t really been advertised – not sure how to pitch this or get the boxes. Promote within the classes

Physician as Leader Elective

  • Could be 2-3 leadership development workshops for members
  • Some component of a project, or “doing something”
  • Would like some feedback on what that class could look like
  • Task oriented leadership training – Erik Arellano has friend Mike Duran who has a connection with West Point training.
  • Can pick and choose what we think are most important and use the curriculum that is available.
  • Maybe a project to make things better, either individual or group
  • Students are hesitant to add new tasks just for the sake of leadership – maybe a little more structure around projects we already do – “leadership infusion” Into what we already do.
  • Structure for a curriculum and a set of skills, not focused on a task
  • We have a lot of ideas and enthusiasm, but if there is someone who wants to lay the ground work, keep projects consistent from year to year
  • Opening it up to everyone?
  • Might be a good way to recruit more at-large reps or people who wouldn’t be involved typically. If someone is in the class, they are signing up to be an at-large rep and get more people involved.
  • We end up with 15 at large rep, dilute the votes of people who have been elected by the class.
  • Overlap with the LEADS track
  • Maybe focus on challenges around leadership? How do you talk to someone who is not doing what they are supposed to? Etc.
  • Each week a few students present a workshop that revolves around leadership – how to get buy in, how to deal with conflict, etc. There might be faculty who might present on these topics
  • Should be distinct from the LEADS track, this is for student leaders within our class.
  • How do we approach developing this course
  • 10-15 Learning Goals to achieve each year? How do we want to do it?
  • Having the elective might encourage people to run for positions
  • Applying this to our future, have chief resident come in, leadership in a professional setting and get people from the health care team to mentor us.
  • Do we want to make it this big and have such a large time commitment? Adding more to already very full plates.
  • Gives a little clout on an ERAS application
  • Making it an elective can make that easier
  • Form new subcommittee for this:

How are we doing?

  • Look back at our goals from the retreat.
