CLASS TITLE:PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is work reporting to and assisting a licensed pharmacist in the preparation and distribution of pharmaceuticals in an institution, county health department or other state pharmacy.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Prepares supply of medication for assigned unit(s) and supplies these areas.
  • Assists the pharmacist in processing physician's medication orders and maintains patient records and master medication profiles.
  • Selects and assembles medication, strength, quantity and labeling for review and dispensing.
  • Transports completed medication orders to patient living facilities.
  • Requests prescription authorization from prescribing physicians.
  • Assists the pharmacist or intern in the preparation and processing of prescriptions or pharmacy repack orders.
  • Organizes and maintains accurate patient drug profiles, histories, prescription files, health department files and records.
  • Performs data entry of prescriptions or physicians orders into a computer system generating prescription labels.
  • Organizes and maintains pharmacy log books, issues documents and drug receipts.
  • Prepares medication requisition orders for bulk medication, prepacks and labels unit dose medication and readies for distribution.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and sanitary condition in the pharmacy.
  • Maintains an organized system for medication shelves, cabinets and counters.
  • Orders and/or stocks medications and medical supplies.
  • Assists in inventory control, ensures that stock medication is rotated according to expiration dates and that medication is pulled from the shelves before expiring.
  • Ensures there is an adequate supply of medication in the pharmacy to fill unit needs.
  • Performs other related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the standards and terminology used in the practice of pharmacy.
  • Ability to inventory supplies.

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work responsibilities.
  • Ability to prepare purchase requisitions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent, or completion of a vocational, military or community college pharmacy technician program or licensed practical nursing program and one year of experience as a pharmacy technician, or two years of experience in providing nursing or direct patient care service of a medical nature in a county health department, hospital or institution, clinic, convalescent home or other medical setting.
  • College coursework in pharmacy, nursing or other medical related field can substitute at the rate of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours for the required work experience.
