CLASS TITLE:MEDICAL MALPRACTICE INVESTIGATOR

This is work conducting medical malpractice investigations within the Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Conducts interviews with lawyers, physicians, hospital administrators, insurance executives and others, normally in the presence of an adversary legal counsel, to gather information relating to cases under investigation.
  • Conducts investigations of a complex nature regarding medical malpractice.
  • Testifies in state and federal courts and before grand juries.
  • Conducts surveillance of suspected persons, locations and equipment associated with a case under investigation.
  • Develops and operates confidential and non-confidential sources of information for criminal intelligence.
  • Analyzes medical malpractice claims, obtains and presents patient records to medical experts.
  • Secures, evaluates and documents evidence.
  • Prepares detailed case investigation reports.
  • Makes arrests.
  • Coordinates the receipt of technical information from medical experts.
  • Obtains and serves search warrants.
  • Performs undercover assignments.
  • Attends hearings, civil and criminal court proceedings and provides testimony as pertains to medical malpractice.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in law enforcement, one year of which must have involved the investigation of organized or white collar crime; or
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of professional experience in auditing, accounting or financial examining; or
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of investigative experience, one year of which must have been in the health care field.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Professional or nonprofessional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
