CLASS TITLE:LAW ENFORCEMENT SERGEANT
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is law enforcement work in one of the following areas: (1) supervising Law Enforcement Corporals or Law Enforcement Investigators I; (2) supervising all Law Enforcement Officers in a geographic area of the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission or in a district of the Department of Management Services; (3) supervising Law Enforcement Officers enforcing agricultural, horticultural, and livestock laws; (4) supervising Law Enforcement Officers enforcing motor vehicle carrier laws in the Department of Transportation; (5) supervising all Law Enforcement Officers in a district on one of three shifts in the Department of Environmental Protection; (6) serving as a training and/or information officer; (7) directing the operation of a marine vessel; or (8) supervising a squad of five or more Law Enforcement Officers in the Florida Highway Patrol. The primary duty of the employee(s) in the position(s) allocated to this class is to spend the majority of time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating employees, planning and directing their work; and having the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline subordinate employees or to effectively recommend such actions.

- Supervises crime scene searches which involve the use of sketches, diagrams, photography, processing of latent fingerprints, and the collection and preservation of all evidence.
- Patrols lakes, streams, rivers, and hunting areas; checks hunters and fishermen for licenses and illegal fishing and hunting activities.
- Patrols coastal waters and coastal areas, checking sports and commercial fishermen, seafood processors, and transportation vehicles for licenses and illegal maritime activities.
- Supervises all activities in a sub-district office in the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco.
- Supervises and participates in law enforcement investigations and inspections.
- Responds to citizen complaints and/or assigns officers or investigators to investigate.
- Coordinates law enforcement activities with other state, local, and federal agencies.
- Reviews and evaluates daily shift reports and notifies superiors of any significant occurrences.
- Supervises and directs shift personnel in administering traffic citations, fines, arrest sheets, warrants and complaints, and preparing summary reports.
- Supervises and directs the activities of Law Enforcement Officers and/or Law Enforcement Corporals, and non-sworn security personnel.
- Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of law enforcement radio-telephone/radio-teletype operators.
- Conducts logistical planning surveys and studies related to law enforcement trends, operating efficiency, and effectiveness for law enforcement program involvement.
- Supervises the operation and maintenance of a youth conservation camp.
- Makes recommendations to the central office on beverage license applications and transfers.
- Reviews results of investigative processes and assists in major investigative problems.
- Acts as public information officer.
- Prepares or assists in the preparation of information releases to news, radio and television media; or spot announcements for radio and television to promote safety programs.
- Participates in organizing, obtaining, and implementing law enforcement training.
- Develops lesson plans, prepares training aids and lecture materials, and provides training guidance to instructional personnel and/or delivers lectures.
- Coordinates training curriculum, makes instructor assignments, maintains training records, and/or develops and recommends training schedules.
- Instructs students and/or assists in planning, developing, evaluating, and coordinating in-service law enforcement training.
- Consults with specialized departmental personnel in developing, evaluating, and coordinating law enforcement training programs.
- Develops and/or conducts education and/or public information programs.
- Supervises or administers safety and/or incentive programs.
- Conducts seminars to acquaint a variety of law enforcement personnel with marine resource protection, conservation, and enforcement laws and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Successful completion of the Department of Management Services' written examination for this class and three years of experience in sworn law enforcement or sworn investigations work.
- College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours per year for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
- In addition to the above requirements, Florida Statute 943 requires that any person employed in this class must:
- (1)Be at least 19 years of age.
- (2)Be a citizen of the United States, notwithstanding any laws of the State to the contrary.
- (3)Be a high school graduate or its "equivalent" as the term may be determined by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission of the Department of Law Enforcement.
- (4)Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, nor have received a dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or is found guilty of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.
- (5)Have his/her processed fingerprints on file with the employing agency.
- (6)Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician, based on specifications established by the Commission.
- (7)Have a good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the Commission.
- (8)Possess a current certificate of compliance for basic employment certification issued by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
