CLASS TITLE:INMATE WORK CREW LEADER
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is work supervising and directing the work activities of inmate work crews for the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

- Plans work loads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with inmates.
- Trains inmates in methods for performing an effective and efficient job.
- Communicates with the inmates on a regular basis, both individually and as a group, about their job performance.
- Directs the work of inmates to ensure best use of available time and resources.
- Coordinates the inmate work crews in digging ditches, fire lanes, or maintaining roads by spreading sand, gravel and asphalt in order to complete road foundations, fill potholes, and perform other maintenance work.
- Instructs the inmates in the use and operation of mechanical equipment such as tractors, groundskeeping equipment or sprayers, as well as hand tolls.
- Directs and instructs inmates in the management of the Department's cattle operations.
- Directs and instructs inmates in the work of building maintenance, such as painting, minor concrete and carpentry work.
- Directs inmates engaged in irrigation installation, landscaping and groundskeeping involving the planting, fertilizing and maintaining of lawns, shrubs, flowers, trees, and related foliage plants.
- Instructs inmates in proper methods of planting seedlings in state forests, pruning, clearing obstructions from right-of-ways, and other methods of forestry maintenance.
- Processes seedlings including lifting, grading and shipping.
- Takes soil samples and directs the inmates in fertilizer application.
- Trains inmates in the detection of insects and diseases, directs the mixing, spraying, use and disposal of toxic chemicals for vegetation and insect control.
- Directs inmates in planting, fertilizing, pruning and maintenance of nursery, greenhouse plants and facilities.
- Coordinates the maintenance of the equipment used by inmates to ensure periodic maintenance is performed on mechanical equipment, unusable equipment is replaced, and accountability is maintained.
- Instructs inmates in the proper methods of fire control under the direction of state-certified wildland firefighter
- Coordinates the transportation of inmates to and from the workplace.
- Designs, plans, and executes current and long-range nursery and conservation plans.
- Consults and advises other personnel in various aspects of the forestry conservation programs.
- Requisitions supplies and equipment, takes inventory regularly.
- Maintains records on daily nursery and forestry operations, and other aspects of inmate work crews.
- Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or its equivalent and one year supervisory experience in an outdoor job environment such as agricultural, forestry, plant nursery or building construction operation.
