COURSE – CIVICS TODAY: CITIZENSHIP, ECONOMICS, & YOU

GRADE LEVEL – 7TH

OVERVIEW – Civics is the study of different forms of government, becoming acquainted with economic strategies, and learning about the structure of local, state, and national governments.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS - Students are required to master COURSE OF STUDY STANDARDS Comparing influences of Ancient Greece, Roman Republic, Judeo-Christian tradition, Magna Carta, federalism, Mayflower Compact, the English Bill of Rights, the House of Burgesses, Petition of Rights on the government of the United States;essential characteristics of the political system of the United States; comparing the government of the United States with other governmental systems;structure of state and local governments; functions of members of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government; explaining the importance of juvenile, adult, civil, and criminal laws within the judicial system of the United States ; determining how people organize economic systems to address basic economic questions regarding which goods and services will be produced; appraising the relationship between the consumer and the marketplace in the economy of the United States;applying principles of money management to the preparation of a personal budget;describing individual and civic responsibilities of citizens of the United States; comparing changes in social and economic conditions in the United States during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries; defending how the United States can be improved by individual and collective participation in civic and community activities; identifying contemporary American issues since 2001.

SUPPLIES – Students will need pencils, glue, colored pencils, paper, composition notebook or dividers to use in book binders for their Social Studies Notebook. Social Studies Notebooks will be checked by the teacher ever Friday.

Assessments – daily assignments, tests(no open book test), quizzes, key terms, critical thinking questions, sequencing information, analyzing visuals activities, technological activities, research assignments, evaluating charts, maps, graphs, reading strategies, analyzing primary sources, writing assignments(rubrics), chapter foldables(study organizer), power points, cause and effect assignments

Grading System- 50% daily grades
