Welcome to Freshman English!
Difficulty: Average 2 Sem. — 1 English Credit
Includes writing, reading fluency and comprehension, literature,informational text, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and research.
Syllabus: Although we address all of the grade appropriate standards throughout the year, there will be special emphasis on the following Common Core standards:
· RL.9-10.1. Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
· RL.9-10.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone).
· RL.9-10.6. Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature.
· W.9-10.1. Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

Topics and literature we will study:
1st quarter: The Odyssey, ancient Greece, mythology, and ______
2nd quarter: Romeo and Juliet, the Renaissance, and ______.
3rd quarter: The Miracle Worker, short stories and ______.
4th quarter: Animal Farm, propaganda, logical fallacies, and ______.
Class policies:
1. ATTENDANCE/TARDIES – Red Mountain High School mandated tardy and attendance policies will be strictly followed. You need to make up any work that you miss because of tardy sweep. 10 or more absences, excused or unexcused will mean (b) ______.
2. MATERIALS – I expect you to have a (c) ______ and paper with you every class period. You will also need a Student Handbook for recording homework, (d) ______ one (1) three-ring binder, 5 dividers and a reading book.
3. CHEATING – Dishonesty will not be tolerated. (e) ______papers will receive a zero, as will cheating on a test. It takes two people to cheat; therefore, (f) ______parties will receive a zero. Parents may also be contacted.
There is absolutely no talking during testing times.
4. FOOD AND DRINK – I allow (g) ______ in my room. Please do not even bring it in the room to throw in the trash. You can bring water in a closed container.
5. USE OF TIME – I expect each student to use each minute of class time wisely. If you finish your work before the rest, please work on other assignments, or read your (h) ______.
6. PARTICIPATION – You will earn (i) ______ points for participation in this class every day. These points will be essential to your success in this class. To earn your points you will have to follow all classroom rules and will have to participate in class discussions and work. Participation points will make up a substantial part of your grade.
7. PASSES –There is (j) ______ emergency pass per quarter in this class. If you do not use your pass, you can turn it in for 15 points of extra credit at the end of the quarter. If you are feeling sick, please let me know and I will send you to the nurse’s office. If you have a medical condition that warrants frequent bathroom visits please let me know.
8. CONDUCT – I expect everyone to show (k) ______
______(RCK) to everyone else. It should be understood that anyone speaking, reporting, answering, asking questions or commenting in class will be given the courtesy of being heard. This is a matter of respect. Other guidelines to follow:
A. Be (l) ______ and be ready to work when the bell rings. Start your bell work right away. Do not leave your seat without (m)______.
B. No disruptive or disrespectful behavior.
C. (n) ______ and wait for permission to talk.
D. Follow instruction the first time given.
E. No (o) ______ in class. If I see or hear these items I will take them away and you can retrieve them them from Mr. Alvarado. Cell phone violations mean automatic in house suspension.
9. HOMEWORK – Your constant homework assignment is to practice (p) ______and read your ______.
Other homework will also be assigned on a regular basis. Homework is due at the beginning of the period.
10. INDEPENDENT READING – you will have to choose a book from our recommended reading list and read 300 pages each quarter. You will get points for reading your book and successfully quizzing over the pages you have read. This type of quizzing will be explained to you in class. It is essential that you get started with this assignment as soon as possible. If you procrastinate and run out of time, you will not be able to talk to me about your book, and your grade will be majorly affected. If you are absent on the day the assignment is due, you will (q)______ to quiz over the pages. You will have to bring your book with you every day. Any time you have extra time in class, take out your book and read.
11. ESSAYS – Essays will be (r) ______, double spaced, Times New Roman , 12 point font unless written neatly in pen, on one side of each page.
Students can rewrite major essay until they achieve mastery.
12. LATE WORK – (s) ______work will be accepted. Exceptions may be made for major assignments on an individual basis. If you have an excused absence on a day an assignment is due you must turn in the assignment the day (t) ______When you miss class work because of an absence, you have to make up the missing work. If you do not make up your work you will receive a zero on the missing assignments regardless of whether the absence was excused or unexcused. For each day of absence, you have (u) ______ to make up the work.
You can make up assignments before school at 7:30 in my classroom.
Please use your Student Handbook to keep track of due dates and assignments. Also, use my website through Red Mountain High School and check the class calendar to keep up with due dates and assignments.
13. GRADES: I grade on a point system. Your grade will be based on a cumulative record of all your assigned work. I do NOT round up grades.
90-100 % = A
80-89 % = B
70-79% = C
60-69%=D
At the end of the semester, the two quarters are averaged to calculate your semester grade. You and your parents can check your grades at any time by logging on to the Parent Portal. Your parents will have to set up an account for you to be able to check your grades.
16. HELP! I am here to help you learn! If you have any questions, please ask me. I will be glad to arrange for a time when I can work with you privately if you need extra help. Your parents are also encouraged to call or e-mail me any time they have a question or concern. Work hard and you will have a successful experience!
