Class Syllabus 7th Grade Writing

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students enrolled in the Writing class are challenged to improve and refine oral and written communication skills. They will plan, draft, and complete a variety of writing assignments such as expository, persuasive, narrative, and literary analysis compositions. Special emphasis is placed on pre-writing and editing strategies to produce an error-free final product. Writing students will read excessively from world literature and across multiple genres. Vocabulary development and the mastery of mechanics and grammar are highly stressed.

GRADES

Students will be graded on essays according to the state rubrics. Final essays will be major grades. Examples of daily grades will come from class discussions, daily practice on revising and editing skills, homework, teacher observation, and checkpoints. Summative Assessments will be given in the form of tests, essays, presentations, and projects.

TUTORING

Student success is of upmost importance to me. Please contact me if you feel like your child may require extra help before or after school.

HOMEWORK

Most of our work will be completed in class; however, anything and everything we do in class has the potential to become homework.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Each student is expected to bring a pen or pencil, a separate 3-subject spiral notebook, and loose-leaf paper to complete daily assignments.

As your child’s teacher:

·  I will create a safe environment for learning.

·  I will value your child’s needs.

·  I will prepare valuable lessons that have a “real world” approach.

·  I will strive for fairness and consistency.

As a class, we will create a Social Contract that will be followed throughout the semester. If your child chooses to follow the contract, both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards will be given; however, if your child chooses to not follow the contract, he/she can expect consequences.

BEHAVIORAL CONSEQUENCES are as follows:

·  1st Offense: Verbal Redirection

·  2nd Offense: Second Redirection

·  3rd Offense: Lunch Detention w/ note home

·  4th Offense: Lunch Detention w/ parent phone call or email

·  5th Offense: After School Detention

I believe in having an open line of communication with parents to ensure student success. Please contact me with any concerns you have before they turn into problems. I’m excited to have your child in my class this year. Thank you for your cooperation!
