ABOUTTHE COURSE

This course is a collaborative learningexperience in which thestudents, as collaboratingpeers,will explorethe primaryactivities of designing costumes forthe performingarts.Thenatureofcollaborationrequires that all studentsarrive to eachclass with theassigned readingand/orhomeworkcompleted—lateworkmaynot beacceptedandmight notreceive credit (at thediscretion ofthe instructor). It is suggested that students scheduleample studyandhomeworktime outsideof class. For each hour spent in the classroom,you should expect to spend 2-4hours forthatcourse’s homework. Ifyou do that math, this course will requireapproximately6hours ofwork outside of the classroom to completethe work successfullyand achieveanartisticallysatisfactoryresult. Online research homework is amajorcomponent in this course, soyou will needaccess to acomputerand theInternet.Some coursematerialsareonline,posted inBlackboard(see below). See theOSD policyat end of syllabus ifyou need specialaccommodations.

COURSEOBJECTIVES

1.CourseObjective: Students will activelyinvestigate andpractice thestandard methodsandprocesses of costume design forperforming arts,gainingskills, andtechniques to createdesigns for characters.

2.Students will read a dramaticplayscriptfrom theviewpoint of adesigner,and will analyzeand chart thedramaticaction, and the play’scharacters.

3.Students will research period styles,analyze dramatictext, outline anddocument theirowndesign ideas.

4.Students will create costume designrenderings toexpresstheirthoughts and ideasaboutdramatic characters using a text-centeredapproach.

5.Students will effectivelyutilize technologyas ameans to research “period style”and tocommunicateeffectively.

6.Students who successfullycompletethe course willexperience a process for realizing atheatrical costume designthat meetsnationalstandards in the field.

7.Students who successfullycompletethe course will createworkthat is intended to contributeto thestudent’s design portfolio development.

8.Students will create costume designcolor palettes.

9.Students will observe costumes in a live theatreperformance and will study, analyze,andreport their experience ina writtenreport/analysis.

10.In thecostume shop studioofthe Department of TheatreandDance , students willparticipatein the creation ofcostumesforalivetheatreperformanceand will study,analyze,andself-evaluatetheirexperiencethroughasurveyat theend ofthe semester.

This course is “web assisted”which means that the internet andFAU’sBlackboard (an onlinelearningmanagementsystem) will be used to share requiredinformation,to submit homework,and to conductresearch. Thesyllabusand otherimportant course documents are posted onlinein Blackboard.

Thewrittenhomeworkassignments in this course utilize specific online research tools andstrategies, so access to acomputerand access to the internet arerequired.

In this online discussionspace,students can askeach otherquestions, answerquestions,and helpform a cooperativeandcollaborative onlineenvironment.All student questions,comments orconcernsabout thecourseshould be postedhere; almost like raisingyour hand in class.Pleasehelpanswer questions and concernsforyourclassmates and beagood online citizen!

In orderto facilitate effective communication outsideof theclassroom, thecoursepolicyis thatALLcommunications about this course MUST be sentthrough thecourse’s Blackboardsite. InBlackboard the link to the coursecommunicationcenter (discussion board)is on the far leftmenu.

Whenyou have questions or issues related to anythingabout thecourse,andyou need tocommunicate in writing,please avoidcommunications outside the Blackboardsystem(i.e. textmessages/writtennotes/Facebook) becausethesemaynot reach theinstructor in atimelymanner,and/ormaynot be receivedat all due to spam filters.

Ifyouhavea private issueto discuss with the instructor,and want to communicate via email, usethe “MessageTool”in Blackboard—this is an email systemthat functionsonlyinsideofBlackboard. This tool can also be usedbystudents to communicatewitheachother.

SPECIALCOURSEREQUIREMENTS:

Students will be creating artisticexpressionscalledcostume renderings—most renderings areinthe form ofapencil sketch, colored with paint, but there areothermethods of rendering. For thiscourse,thesegraphic illustrations of the intendedlook ofa character’scostumeswill be createdon special art papercalledBristolboard. The special materialsrequired for the course arelistedhere—theremaybeother smallerincidentalmaterialsthat will be discussed in class. SeethecourseSchedule below for specific dates thatyoumust have thesematerials.

Students arerequired tohave the followingart supplies forthis course:

  • 11"×14" Bristolboard (24 sheet pad recommended) –youmayneed moreor less. Formost students, 24 sheetsare morethan enough forthe course.
  • Gouache paint, atleast theprimarycolorsand black and white
  • Watercolorpaintbrushes
  • Paintpalette,clean up materials,etc.
  • Pencilspencil sharpener
  • A large artgumeraser
  • Glossymagazinesthatyoucancut up for colorswatches
  • Other minor misc. materials maybedesirable—wewill discuss these in class

SIGN UPFOR COSTUMESHOPLAB

OBJECTIVE:Studentswill experience how costume designsareturned into actualcostumeswornbyperformers in aperformance. Tothat end, and to get a “real world”understandingofcostumesand how theyarecreated,students willbe required to sign up forand complete 10hours in the Department of Theatre and Dance’sCostumeShop atFAU.Students will beengaged in awide varietyofactivities in thecreation of actualstagecostumes.Students will beintroduced to thecostumeshop managerwho will supervise thispart ofthecoursework,and willalsokeeptrack of studenthours. Student experiences will beassessed at the end ofthe semesterthrough aself-assessed surveyandgroup discussion.
