Greetings,

This letter is to seek interest of yacht clubs and sailing organizations on Narragansett Bay to host a regatta. The J/30 Class Association voted to hold the 2013 North American Championship (NAs) on Narragansett Bay. It is up to the J/30 Southern New England District (J30SNE) to determine the dates and venue for this event. In support of this goal, J30SNE is soliciting proposals from yacht clubs and sailing organizations on Narragansett Bay to host this event. The following information is offered to facilitate proposal preparation.

Requested Host Club Support:

  1. The host club shall propose specific dates that the 2013 J/30 North American Championship can be held. The preferred period is between 13 June 2013 and 13 October 2013. Proposing multiple potential dates is encouraged.
  2. The host club shall arrange for mooring and/or dock space for all competitors as required. The space shall be available to all competitors starting on the day of measurement, through the closing ceremony after the last race. Competitors may coordinate with the host club to arrange space outside of these times, at their own expense.
  3. The host club shall provide the Signal boat, mark boats with marks and associated crews for the regatta.
  4. The host club shall provide a US Sailing Certified PRO, race committee and judges in support of a protest committee.
  5. The host club shall provide facilities to accommodate seating for up to 275 people for dinners / receptions associated with the regatta. The facilities shall be able tosupport these events during inclement weather (e.g. inside, or a covered area such as a pavilion or tent.)
  6. The host club should have adequate facilities to accommodate sail measurements prior to the first race.
  7. The host club shall provide and be compensated for all agreed to social expenses. Dinners are required after the Friday and Saturday races. Suggestions include a New England Lobster boil one night and Open baked Pizza or Barbeque the other night. Alternative menus may be proposed. It is also requested that light snacks be available for the Skippers meeting on Thursday evening and the awards after racing on Sunday.
  8. Alcohol costs shall not be included as part of the dinner. A cash bar will need to be available Thursday Friday Saturday and Sunday. It may be supplemented by an alcohol sponsor.
  9. The host club shall have the equivalent of a “Regatta Insurance” policy offered through US Sailing.

J/30 Class Support:

  1. The regatta is sailed over three days – typically Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The J/30 Class rules specify a maximum of seven races. For specific J/30 Class Rule information, refer to and select “Class”, “By-laws, Rules, Specifications” from the menu.
  2. Measurement and crew weigh-in typically occur on the Thursday before the first race.
  3. A skippers meeting would be held on the Thursday evening after measurement.
  4. The J/30 Class Association prepares all regatta documents and will coordinate with the host organization to facilitate review and comment incorporation. Sample regatta documents from the 2008 J/30 North American Championship are available for viewing at the following website:
  5. The J/30 Class Association has the ability to collect regatta entry fees and has a web site for online registration.
  6. J30SNE will arrange personnel to conduct measurement and weigh-in in accordance with J/30 Class rules. J30SNE provides all the measurement check lists, equipment and scales.
  7. J30SNE will sell regatta unique merchandise such as shirts, hats, etc. This includes all transactions, and support personnel.
  8. It is expected that there will be from 15 to 30 registered boats competing. Each boat includes a crew of seven people, including the skipper, and may have non-racing support people or family in attendance.
  9. J30SNE will arrange for sponsorship including cash, merchandise and services. It is anticipated that there will be liquor sponsorship in support of the event.
  10. J30SNE will arrange for any loaner boats in support of the regatta.
  11. J30SNE will arrange for an organizing committee to work with the host club starting approximately twelve months before the regatta.

It is requested that your organization assess the requirements and provide an email response of interest / no-interest no later than September 15th2011. For organizations that are able to host the event and express interest, you will be contacted separately to discuss further details and coordinate your proposal submission.

Sincerely,

Mark Rotsky
