FIBRE TO FABRIC QUESTIONS

I. OBJECTIVES:

LWBAT

1.  Develops understanding of fibres and their types

2.  Develops understanding of source, cultivation and development of fabric from fibres like cotton and jute.

3.  Develops understanding of other useful plant fibres like coir, hemp and flax.

II. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING :

1.  What is fibre?

Ans: A single hair like strand, resembling a thin thread.

2.  What is fabric?

Ans: The cloth obtained by weaving or knitting from fibres or yarn.

3.  Define yarn:

Ans: A long continuous length of interlocked fibres that is woven or knitted for making garments.

4.  Types of fibres?

5.  What are natural fibres? Name the types of natural fibres?

Ans: Natural fibres are obtained from natural sources, i.e. plants and animals.

Example: Cotton, jute, silk, wool, etc.

6.  What are synthetic fibres?

Ans: Synthetic fibres are man-made fibres and are not obtained from any plant and animal sources.

Example: Nylon, Polyester and Acrylic.

7.  Name two items that are made from coconut fibre.

Ans: Coir and jute.

8.  From which parts of the plant cotton and jute are obtained?

Ans: Cotton is obtained from seed.

Jute is obtained from stem.

9.What are the conditions required to grow cotton plants?

Ans: Cotton plants grow best in warm areas with moderate climate its grown best with black soil.

Cotton Fibres: Cotton fibre is obtained from cotton plants that grow in black soil in a warm climate. In India, cotton is grown in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.

The cotton plant bears fruits about the size of a lemon, called cotton bolls. The bolls are full of seeds and cotton fibre. They burst open when they are ripe. The cotton fibres are collected by hand from the ripe cotton bolls. This process is called picking. Next, the cotton fibres are separated from the seeds by combing them. This is known as ginning. Earlier, ginning was done by hand, but nowadays, a machine is used.

10.What are the conditions required to grow jute plants?

Jute Fibre: Jute fibre comes from jute plants, which are mainly grown in places that have high temperatures and plenty of rainfall. Jute is cultivated during the rainy season. In India, jute is cultivated in West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh and Tripura.

The jute plant is generally harvested when it is in the flowering stage. The stems of jute plants are soaked in water for a few days until they start rotting. Then the fibres are separated by hand from the rotting stems. Once the fibres have been obtained, they are made into yarn by twisting the strands together. This process of making yarn from fibre is called spinning.

Not just jute, even cotton, silk and other fibres are spun to convert them into yarn. Machines are used for spinning yarn on a large scale. Fabrics like khadi are made by spinning yarn on hand-operated devices like charkhas and taklis.

III .HOTS

1.  Why do we wear clothes?

Ans: people wear clothes to protect themselves from different climate.

2.  Dress materials made of synthetic fibres are more popular than natural fibres why?

Ans: Synthetic fibre is more popular than cotton cotton because it is strechablee and flexible and also they used advanced technologic to make synthetic fibre.

3.  A person working in a kitchen is advised not to wear synthetic clothes. Explain .

Ans: We are advised do not wear synthetic fibre because it melts and sticks to our skin.

4.Why are jute fibres not use to make cloths?

Ans: Jute cannot be used for making clothes because it is too rough.

5. Why is the use of jute and cotton bags being encouraged these days?

Ans: biodegradable,recyclable,environmental friendly.
